Harry Maguire described the “craziest game” of his life as a perfect reflection of his rollercoaster career at Manchester United after netting the decisive goal in a thrilling 5-4 win over Lyon, propelling his team into the Europa League semi-finals.
Following a 2-2 stalemate in the first leg, United looked set to progress comfortably when they went into half-time with a 2-0 advantage on Thursday night.
However, Lyon mounted a comeback to equalise at 2-2 before losing Corentin Tolisso to a red card just ahead of extra time.
Remarkably, the ten-man Lyon managed to surge ahead, taking a 4-2 lead with only six minutes left in extra time.
A penalty from Bruno Fernandes and a composed finish from Kobbie Mainoo brought United back to parity in a lively Old Trafford atmosphere, before Maguire made his mark with a header after being pushed forward as an emergency striker.
Since joining United for a record fee as a defender in 2019, Maguire has faced considerable scrutiny during his tenure with the club.
After serving as club captain, he found himself out of the picture under Erik ten Hag, struggling to regain form even after being reinstated under new manager Ruben Amorim.
“I’ve been here for six years, witnessing some fantastic moments as well as some tough times,” Maguire reflected.
“That match encapsulated my journey at this club perfectly, to be honest.
“Scoring the winner in such a crucial game, full of emotion, was an incredible feeling – it was the strangest and craziest match I’ve ever participated in or seen.”
United will face Athletic Club in the semi-finals, with a chance to salvage their season.
Amorim’s side currently sits 14th in the Premier League and is unlikely to qualify for European competition unless they secure the Europa League title.
“We’re just at the semi-final stage, so we can’t get ahead of ourselves about winning the tournament,” Maguire cautioned.
“This season has been incredibly challenging for everyone involved – fans, players, and staff alike.
“It hasn’t been nearly good enough, and moments like that are crucial, allowing fans to leave with a smile.”
Athletic Club have experienced fewer defeats in LaLiga this season compared to giants Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Additionally, they have the extra incentive of playing the final at their home ground, San Mamés, on May 21st.
Maguire understands that United must significantly elevate their performance levels against Lyon to reach the final.
“We must do much better if we want to contend for this title,” the England international stated.
“We can’t allow ourselves to find ourselves in those situations and rely on comebacks.
“Nevertheless, it demonstrates great spirit, determination, and togetherness – qualities this group possesses, and they’re giving their all.”
