Diego Simeone, the coach of Atletico Madrid, expressed that he is unfazed by his team’s knack for falling behind as they make their way back into matches, after their impressive 4-2 comeback victory against Real Valladolid at home on Monday.
Currently sitting in third place, Atletico found themselves trailing early against LaLiga’s bottom team. However, a brace of penalties from Julian Alvarez, along with goals from Giuliano Simeone and Alexander Sorloth, secured a win that could energise their slim title aspirations.
Atletico now sits seven points adrift of leaders Barcelona and three points behind second-placed Real Madrid.
This marks their second consecutive comeback, following a last-minute 2-1 victory against Sevilla the previous week, which ended a three-match winless streak.
“It happened against Sevilla and again today,” Simeone stated to the press. “Valladolid’s goals were somewhat fortunate.
“What matters is our response as a team; the penalties and Giuliano’s goal arrived, and although we slowed the pace for a while, the match eventually unfolded in our favour,
“We understand there’s no such thing as an easy game; there will always be challenging phases. It’s impossible to control everything throughout the match.
“There are uncontrollable factors, as was the case today. However, we managed to cope well with these challenges through teamwork, just as we have been doing all season.”
The Argentine manager lauded his son Giuliano’s performance, admitting he was taken aback by his level of play this season but emphasised the need for the winger to maintain consistency, noting that “nothing will be handed to him.”
“I honestly didn’t anticipate him performing at this level; I expected him to contribute, which is why I considered him just another player in our squad,” Simeone remarked about the 22-year-old.
“To be frank, he’s enjoying a remarkable season, and I hope he continues on this path. No one has given him anything for free, and no one will. He understands that better than anyone.”
Simeone also praised Julian Alvarez, who has now netted 26 goals across all competitions this season.
“Julian is having an outstanding season; we need a player like him, especially at crucial moments, like against Sevilla and today.
“He has scored 14 goals in the league, but we remind him that (LaLiga’s top scorer with 25) Robert Lewandowski has scored many more,” Simeone added with a chuckle.
