Forwards Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford are swiftly acclimatising to Aston Villa’s playing style and gaining in confidence, according to manager Unai Emery, following their impressive partnership that propelled the club into the FA Cup quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over Cardiff City.
Rashford provided the assist for Asensio’s opening goal against the English second-tier team Cardiff at Villa Park on Friday. The England international had also set up the Spaniard for both of his goals during Villa’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Chelsea in the Premier League last Saturday.
Rashford, currently on loan from Manchester United, and Asensio, who is on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, have quickly made their mark.
“They are adjusting well to our framework…” Emery stated to the media.
“They bring a wealth of skills that enhance our tactics, contributing significantly as they have been. They’re finding the back of the net and providing assists for their teammates, all while thriving in our setup and feeling at ease.
“Their confidence is on the rise. It’s crucial that every player supports one another in our framework, making us as competitive as possible.”
Emery emphasised the importance of savouring the achievement, as Villa reached the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time in a decade, yet he refrained from naming his team as the outright favourites to clinch the title, given that heavyweights Manchester City, Manchester United, and Newcastle United are still in contention.
“We recognise that this competition offers a chance for silverware, a pathway to Wembley, and potential access to the Europa League. It carries prestige for the club, and our supporters are eager and motivated to join us on this journey,” Emery remarked.
Next up for Villa is an away match against Belgian side Club Brugge for the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 on Tuesday.
