Following their exit from the Champions League at the hands of PSV Eindhoven in the knockout phase playoffs, Juventus manager Thiago Motta is keen for his players to channel their frustrations into a positive performance during their Serie A encounter against Cagliari on Sunday.
Juventus suffered a 3-1 defeat to PSV on Wednesday, culminating in a 4-3 aggregate loss, and currently sit fourth in the league table, with 46 points accrued from 25 fixtures, placing them 10 points adrift of league leaders Napoli.
“In the wake of such a setback, the best remedy is to hit the pitch and compete. We’re aware of the challenges ahead and must aim for victory…,” stated Motta during a press conference.
“The disappointment is significant, as we believed we could progress to the round of 16. Now, it’s time to regroup and focus on the upcoming match. We face a demanding week ahead and need to remain strategic as we always have.”
Reports from the Italian media indicate that Motta has addressed the Juventus squad post-Champions League elimination, urging them to elevate their intensity.
When queried about his conversations with the players, Motta remarked: “They grasp the situation fully and we strive for maximum effort.”
“The players are astute and capable; they understand our objectives. Occasionally, even with minimal differences, the opposing side was the better team.”
In their previous encounter, Juventus triumphed over Cagliari 4-0 during a Coppa Italia showdown in December, although their last two Serie A fixtures against the same opponents ended in stalemates.
“A number of matches have transpired, and we’ve contested against Cagliari in both the league and the Cup,” noted Motta.
“It’s a tricky venue, proven so for all teams, yet we maintain confidence in our ability to challenge them and secure the three points needed to advance.”
Motta also commended winger Timothy Weah for his seamless shift to a more defensive position, with the United States international stepping up as a right back due to an ongoing shortage of options in defence.
“I perceive him as excelling in this role. He defends effectively, displays aggression, and triumphs in numerous duels,” he elaborated.
“He has the potential to enhance his performance in this position and offers us invaluable contributions in the attacking phase,” Motta added. “I’m extremely pleased with Timothy, and if he can find the net, that’s an added bonus.”
