The future of Carlton ruckman Tom De Koning has come under scrutiny, following speculation that a competing club has proposed a contract worth $12 million over seven years for the 25-year-old.
During a press conference at Marvel Stadium on Wednesday, De Koning sidestepped queries regarding his future prospects.
Earlier this month, reports surfaced indicating that St Kilda was prepared to present De Koning with a lucrative long-term deal exceeding $1.5 million per season.

If signed, such a contract would position him as the highest-earning player in the league.
Reports also suggest that Carlton has put forth a seven-year offer ranging from $7 to $8 million to retain De Koning’s services.
While acknowledging that there are significant factors to contemplate with his current contract set to expire at the end of 2025, De Koning shifted the focus back to Carlton’s opening match against the Tigers.
“I’m definitely not putting a timeline on it,” he stated.
“Right now, my primary focus is on facing Richmond in round one and anticipating that first bounce. That’s where my head is, and anything happening behind the scenes is between my manager and the club.”
“I’m content with how everything stands at the moment and can’t wait to get out there and play round one.”
“Sure, there’s a lot to evaluate, but my main priority is working with the coaches and fulfilling my role for the team.”
“As I mentioned, I’m really satisfied with how things are going and enjoy playing alongside this group; that’s all I can share at this juncture.”

Having played 78 games for Carlton since being drafted with pick No. 30 in the 2017 draft, De Koning last signed a contract in 2023.
He extended his stay for another two years to reach free agency despite interest from clubs such as St Kilda, Geelong, and Sydney.
Currently, De Koning asserts that his ongoing contract discussions and the related attention are akin to what he and his teammates have faced in the past.
“It’s nothing that my teammates haven’t dealt with before, similar to what I experienced two years back,” he noted.
“I find myself in a situation that players like Crippa (Patrick Cripps), Charlie (Curnow), Walshy (Sam Walsh), and Harry (McKay) have all faced. I’m genuinely content where I am and eager to play.”
When asked if team success would influence his ultimate decision, De Koning chose not to confirm but expressed faith in the Blues’ ability to start strong this season.
“We’re in a solid position at Carlton to achieve success very soon,” he expressed.
“We’re pleased with how the pre-season has gone, and we can’t wait to showcase our capabilities.”
Carlton is set to kick off its 2025 campaign against Richmond at the MCG on March 13.
