Tottenham Hotspur broke their seven-match winless streak at home in the Premier League (D2, L5) with a narrow 1-0 victory over Manchester United. This result also marked the first instance since the 2012/13 season where the Red Devils have suffered three defeats against the same team in a single campaign.
Traditionally in competition for European spots, these two underperforming sides faced each other in unfamiliar territory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, both languishing in the lower half of the league table prior to kick-off.
The season has been riddled with injuries for Spurs, but the return of Guglielmo Vicario provided a glimmer of hope. The goalkeeper made crucial saves to deny Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho in quick succession, before Diogo Dalot’s follow-up was brilliantly cleared off the line by Ben Davies.
Tottenham made the most of their luck by taking the lead when Andre Onana fumbled Lucas Bergvall’s shot into the path of James Maddison, who scored his first goal in 11 matches against United.
In search of an equaliser, Joshua Zirkzee sent a shot just wide, shortly before Garnacho squandered a prime opportunity, sending the ball over the bar from close range and extending his goal drought since November.
The first half was open and entertaining, creating chances for both teams, yet only a single goal separated them at the half-time break after Mathys Tel, making his league debut, failed to convert a cut-back from Son Heung-min beyond Onana.

The second half resumed with both teams showing intent, as Tel narrowly missed the target after a promising run down the wing by Djed Spence.
United enjoyed a strong phase of play, with Garnacho testing Vicario under pressure from Pedro Porro, and soon after forcing a low save from the keeper with a sharp strike from a tight angle.
Ruben Amorim was hesitant to turn to his youthful bench, which was predominantly made up of teenagers, and kept faith in his starting eleven right up until the final moments. However, the absence of Amad Diallo, likely out for the remainder of the season with injury, was noticeably problematic.
A glancing header from Zirkzee that sailed wide was the closest United came to finding an equaliser late on, with Onana called into action again to parry away a close-range effort from Dejan Kulusevski shortly thereafter.
Another disappointing afternoon for Amorim concluded with his side sliding down to an almost unbelievable 15th in the league, now placed below Tottenham, who have claimed back-to-back Premier League wins following a dismal stretch of seven without a victory (D1, L6).
