Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou (59) stated that the team’s disciplined defensive display during their 2-0 victory over Brentford on Sunday was primarily due to an injury crisis that has left him with a depleted squad, rather than a sudden shift towards a more pragmatic approach.
The Australian coach has been grappling with significant injury woes, which have necessitated the inclusion of 18-year-old midfielder Archie Gray in the centre-back position, as Micky van de Ven was rested following his 45-minute return in the Europa League earlier in the week.
Spurs’ ongoing European campaign, bolstered by Thursday’s win over Elfsborg that guaranteed them a place in the last 16, has limited recovery opportunities for the fit players, contributing to a dip in their league form.
Nonetheless, Spurs continue to vie for silverware on three fronts, a crucial measure for assessing the season’s success, and a factor that could influence Postecoglou’s future with the club.
Postecoglou has consistently pointed to the increasing injury toll as a reason for the team’s inconsistent results, becoming increasingly frustrated by inquiries from journalists regarding Spurs’ performances.
He shared a wry laugh when questioned about whether the team’s late defensive resilience and low-block strategy against Brentford represented a departure from his traditional attacking style known as ‘Angeball’.
“How do I articulate this without sounding repetitive and like I’m making excuses? It’s incredibly challenging for a group of players to compete on Thursdays and Sundays and maintain their energy and performance levels,” Postecoglou conveyed to the media.
“What they are delivering is maximum effort, but in a match like today, that often means you can’t be sharp or dynamic with or without the ball—it’s simply unfeasible.
“They’re human beings, not machines. While many might brush this off as an excuse, that’s the reality; I am well aware of the situation.
“These players are putting in their all. We recognised that today wouldn’t be a game where we could dominate, particularly as Brentford had a full week to prepare.
“Meanwhile, we had just over 50 hours (since the Elfsborg match) with the same group. Given that context, I believe the performance was commendable.”
Postecoglou also expressed his appreciation for the loan signing of defender Kevin Danso, but noted that the injury sustained by centre-back Radu Dragusin during the midweek match “doesn’t look promising.”
He mentioned that the club is contemplating further squad additions but added: “We’re not looking to bring in just anyone, and sometimes that process takes a bit longer.”
