A number of Manchester City supporters took a cheeky jab at Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr (24) during the Champions League playoff clash on Tuesday, unfurling a banner depicting City midfielder Rodri (28) holding the Ballon d’Or trophy alongside the phrase, “Stop crying your heart out.”
However, Vinicius, who believes his activism against racism was a factor in him missing out on the prestigious accolade last year, turned the taunt into motivation, assisting Jude Bellingham in netting a late goal that secured Real’s 3-2 win in the first leg of the tie.
“Yes, I noticed it. Sometimes the actions of opposing fans propel me to deliver an outstanding performance. I was able to do that again tonight, which helped us clinch the victory,” Vinicius remarked after being named player of the match.
Real had called off their plans to attend the Ballon d’Or ceremony, anticipating that Vinicius wouldn’t win the men’s award, with several teammates and former striker Cristiano Ronaldo asserting that the Brazilian star was deserving of the honour.
In December, Vinicius was awarded the FIFA Player of the Year 2024 title.
“We need to return to Madrid, where our fans will create an unforgettable atmosphere,” Vinicius stated following Tuesday’s triumph.
“The second leg will be challenging, but we must maintain our performance and defend like we did this evening to create another magical night in front of our supporters.”
Defending champions Real are set to welcome City for the second leg next Wednesday.
