Brian Riemer, the coach of the Danish national team, has admitted that Denmark must take full responsibility for their failure to qualify for the World Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout loss to the Czech Republic on Tuesday night.
The Czech Republic secured their place in this year’s World Cup by overcoming Denmark 3-1 in penalties following a thrilling match, where they led both in regular and extra time on Tuesday.
Denmark entered the World Cup qualifiers as the top-seeded team, but despite having three opportunities to achieve the required outcomes against Belarus, Scotland, and the Czech Republic, the Danish squad will now be on holiday while 48 teams from around the globe compete for the World Cup this summer.
“Naturally, we are deeply disappointed that we couldn’t deliver the ultimate dream for the Danes—a World Cup, something we yearned for, both as players and as a nation. The burden is on us, as we have ultimately failed to qualify,” Riemer stated.
“There’s no point in making excuses after a night like this. We simply lacked the final touch. While we had control over the game in many aspects, we failed to convert enough chances,” Riemer told TV Sport.
He further mentioned that Denmark’s 2-2 draw against Belarus at Parken Stadium, where a win was essential, marked the turning point that led to their struggles in the qualifying campaign.
