As the Super Lig approaches its critical phase, both Galatasaray and Fenerbahce were determined to secure three points amid increasing pressure. Meanwhile, Besiktas faced off against Trabzonspor in one of the league’s marquee matchups.
Next week, Galatasaray will host Fenerbahce in a potential title-decider. However, both teams had immediate tasks to tackle before focusing on what promises to be an exhilarating encounter.
On Sunday, Fenerbahce took on Kasimpasa, hoping to momentarily reduce the gap at the top of the Super Lig to three points.
Despite experiencing a brief scare in the second half, Jose Mourinho’s side triumphed with a 3-1 victory, marking their seventh consecutive league win and showcasing their impressive form.
Youssef En-Nesyri once again proved to be the decisive factor for his team, scoring twice alongside a goal from Oguz Aydin.
A few weeks into the season, many questioned whether the Moroccan justified the record-breaking fee that Fenerbahce parted with for him. He initially struggled to adapt to life in Turkey, appearing out of sync with his teammates and squandering numerous clear opportunities.
Now, however, he looks like a transformed player. An agile centre-forward, his exceptional aerial prowess enables him to score headers seemingly every week, while his enthusiasm and pressure on the opposition have become crucial for Fenerbahce, particularly when paired alongside the experienced but less agile Edin Dzeko.
Currently, he ranks as the league’s second-top scorer with 15 goals, just three behind Krzysztof Piatek.
If he continues at this scoring rate, it will not be surprising to see him catch up with the Pole soon. His contributions will be vital in the weeks ahead, both domestically and in European competitions.
Focus then shifted to Galatasaray, who faced a challenging away match against Rizespor on Monday night.
A six-point lead heading into the Intercontinental Derby would be a comfortable buffer for them, but anything less could see Fenerbahce ominously close behind.
While the atmosphere surrounding Fenerbahce has lifted lately, the same cannot be said for Galatasaray.
Despite boasting an impressive league record this season, which stands out within Europe, questions linger over manager Okan Buruk’s tactical nous, with critics suggesting he relies heavily on the individual brilliance of his players to assert dominance in Turkey.
These concerns have become pronounced in Europe, as Galatasaray has suffered several embarrassing defeats under Buruk. This was highlighted again last week in the Europa League, where they were thrashed 4-1 by AZ Alkmaar, leading many fans to voice their discontent towards the manager.
Understandably, this match against Rizespor was crucial.
For about 60 minutes, they delivered another lacklustre performance, mirroring their recent struggles.
Although they took the lead shortly after half-time thanks to a delightful cross from debutant Przemyslaw Frankowski that allowed Victor Osimhen to nod home, they quickly conceded an equaliser from Ali Sowe.
The tide turned with the introduction of midfielder Mario Lemina, making his second debut for the club after a loan period in the 2019/20 season.
Lemina was signed from Wolves in January, with fans playing a key role in advocating for his return through social media after he became available from the English club. He had previously been a fan favourite at Galatasaray and had left a positive impression.
Upon his arrival, the team’s performance significantly improved. It was evident that Galatasaray required a holding midfielder to restore balance to their side, freeing Gabriel Sara to adopt a more creative role rather than functioning almost as a central midfielder himself.
Lemina’s presence solidified their midfield, providing robust support for the defence alongside Lucas Torreira. His composure on the ball and capacity to facilitate play from deep were immensely beneficial.
With Lemina on the pitch, Galatasaray seized control of the match and began to create opportunities, eventually leading to Osimhen scoring the winner in the dying minutes, wrenching a header into the top corner following an initial flick-on from Lemina during a corner. The bench erupted in celebration as players flooded onto the pitch.
This critical 2-1 victory not only carried immense significance but also hinted that Buruk may have discovered his most effective midfield combination. With Lemina, Torreira, and Sara functioning cohesively, fans will be hoping to see improved performances.
Full credit must also go to Osimhen. This is precisely why the Nigerian superstar was recruited: to make a difference in pivotal matches and clinch victories for the club, which is exactly what he accomplished.
Besiktas triumph over Trabzonspor
In one of Turkey’s premier fixtures involving two of the biggest clubs, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Besiktas faced off against Trabzonspor on Saturday.
This season has not started well for either club, with both languishing outside the European qualification spots following a dismal beginning to their campaigns.
However, both teams have shown signs of improvement. Besiktas remain unbeaten in the league under Solskjaer, while Trabzonspor had avoided defeat in their last four matches.
Ultimately, Trabzonspor’s unbeaten run had to come to an end as Besiktas continued to progress under the Norwegian.
Trabzonspor initially took the lead through the prolific Simon Banza, whose 14th Super Lig goal of the season put them in front.
However, Besiktas fought back in the second half, with goals from Rafa Silva and an Arseniy Batagov own goal sealing a commendable 2-1 victory for the hosts.
Following this result, Besiktas now sit in fifth place, just two points off the fourth spot. They still trail significantly behind third place, but they are firmly within reach of that Conference League spot now.
As previously mentioned when Solskjaer was appointed, I expect him to steer the club back in the right direction to some extent. At Manchester United, he demonstrated his ability as an effective man manager, which is crucial in the turbulent atmosphere of Turkish football.
Besiktas were in dire straits under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, but Solskjaer has gradually breathed new life into their performances and restored a positive spirit. The team appears to have rediscovered its energy and enthusiasm, with body language reflecting a notable improvement.
While it is unlikely that Solskjaer will be the one to rekindle a title challenge, he should certainly provide a much-needed short-term boost. Whether he can maintain this momentum as expectations rise remains uncertain. However, with two wins and a draw from his first three games, it’s a promising start.

Highlight of the Week
Samsunspor continues to have an outstanding season, currently sitting third in the Super Lig. On Sunday, they achieved a 1-0 victory at Konyaspor, with Marc Bola netting the decisive goal with a superb strike.
Team of the Week

Osimhen earns his spot in the starting XI alongside teammate Sara, while Oguz and Bola also feature in the team due to their impressive performances.
