Arsenal secured a remarkable 3-0 victory over Real Madrid, a win that will be etched in their history, providing a significant boost in their UEFA Champions League (UCL) quarter-final tie while preserving their unbeaten record against the Spanish giants.
The atmosphere at the Emirates was electric, with fans and players alike eager to showcase their resolve on such a landmark evening. William Saliba made his presence known, albeit with mixed results at both ends of the pitch.
The centre-back made a crucial intervention against Vinicius Junior’s cross following a misfired pass from Bukayo Saka, but moments later, he was caught out by a flicked header from Thomas Partey on the goal line. The Gunners persisted in their attacking efforts, yet Declan Rice found his shot thwarted by Raul Asencio, while Partey’s strike was deflected twice before being saved.

After the first 15 minutes, both sides enjoyed periods of possession, with Vinicius sending a shot wide for Los Blancos, while Kylian Mbappé had to settle for a smart save from David Raya after being played in by Jude Bellingham.
At the other end, Saka looked to unsettle the Madrid defence with two enticing passes across the six-yard box, though his teammates were unable to capitalise. When Rice finally connected with a cross, Thibaut Courtois was on hand to tip his header away, before responding swiftly to deny Gabriel Martinelli’s follow-up effort.
Upon resuming, the Gunners came out strong, but Asencio was vigilant, racing out to thwart another chance for Rice.
Just before the hour mark, however, Rice broke the deadlock. After Saka was taken down by David Alaba, Rice stepped up to take a beautifully executed free-kick that curled around Real Madrid’s wall and found the back of the net.
The Gunners continued to press, forcing Courtois into action once more to thwart Martinelli’s shot and then blocking a chance for Mikel Merino, who earned a corner from which Bellingham had to clear Rice’s effort off the line.
Remarkably, Rice managed to better his own goal just 12 minutes later, finding the top corner with another stunning free-kick, igniting jubilant celebrations among the home fans.
The joy multiplied as Myles Lewis-Skelly set up Merino for a smooth finish with just 15 minutes to play, solidifying Arsenal’s unbeaten streak to eight matches across all competitions, and importantly, granting them a three-goal advantage heading into the second leg at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
To add insult to injury for Real Madrid, Eduardo Camavinga received a second yellow card for time-wasting in the closing moments of the match.
It’s a difficult time for Los Blancos, suffering their third consecutive defeat in regular time, yet one would be unwise to completely count out a team that has successfully advanced from their last 12 UCL quarter-finals.
