Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has stated that his team holds just a one percent chance of advancing to the Champions League last 16 against Real Madrid on Wednesday, yet the English champions’ recent signings may provide a glimmer of hope.
In the first leg of the play-off tie last week, City squandered a late 2-1 advantage at home, ultimately losing 3-2 to the reigning champions.
This disappointment has been part of a larger trend this season, as Guardiola’s aging squad has struggled to maintain their form, especially when the pressure ramps up on Champions League nights.
Consequently, City deviated from their usual transfer strategy, splashing out £170 million ($214 million) in January to secure Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis, and Nico Gonzalez.
Unfortunately for City, none of these new players started in the first leg against Madrid. Marmoush was the only one to see action, coming on for the closing minutes, while Gonzalez and Khusanov remained on the bench unused, and Reis was not listed in City’s European squad.
Guardiola may now have second thoughts about this choice, particularly after Marmoush, Gonzalez, and Khusanov played influential roles in what was arguably City’s best display of the season, dominating Newcastle 4-0 at the Etihad on Saturday.
Marmoush particularly shone, netting a first-half hat-trick, which adds another dangerous scoring option alongside Erling Haaland.
Khusanov bounced back from a challenging Premier League debut against Chelsea last month, where he conceded a goal in the opening three minutes and faced the risk of an early red card.
This time out, the Uzbek demonstrated why City invested a reported €40 million (£33 million, $42 million) in him, showcasing his speed to nullify the threat posed by Newcastle’s Alexander Isak. His pace could be vital for City as they face the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and Rodrygo at Santiago Bernabeu.
Guardiola also bestowed special praise on Gonzalez, who has provided the much-needed stability in midfield since Ballon d’Or winner Rodri sustained a serious knee injury in September.
The Barcelona academy product appears set to start upon his return to Spain, with his manager hailing him as a “mini Rodri.”
Gonzalez a game changer
“The balance of the team looks significantly improved with Gonzalez in the line-up,” said former City defender Micah Richards.
“City have players capable of scoring goals and punishing Real, but he brings essential stability behind them, which is crucial for managing the game in Madrid.
“Do they have a better chance of overcoming Real with him in the starting eleven? Absolutely.”
However, even during the most successful periods of Guardiola’s tenure in Manchester, City has frequently found it difficult to conquer the powerhouse that is Madrid in the Champions League.
This marks the fourth consecutive season the two sides have faced off, with City’s only success being a 5-1 aggregate triumph on their way to winning the competition for the first time in 2023.
Three years ago, City appeared to be heading to the Paris final with a two-goal cushion in the second leg before Rodrygo’s rapid double brought the tie level, sending it to extra-time and eventually handing Madrid their 14th European title.
Last year, penalties proved to be Madrid’s saviour after City dominated two score draws in the quarter-finals.
Guardiola acknowledged that the likelihood of his side rediscovering their best form when it matters most seems slim.
“This season, the reality is that we have been far from our best. If you told me we would perform like today (against Newcastle) and finish 22nd in the Champions League table, I would say no, we would finish higher,” remarked the former Barcelona manager.
“The results have not been satisfactory this season. One good performance won’t alter my view.
“If you were to ask anyone before that match, we have a one percent chance, but as long as we have an opportunity, we will give it our all for sure.”
Yet, the addition of fresh talent does instil a sense of optimism that a miracle in Madrid could be on the cards.
