Defending champions Bayer Leverkusen slipped further behind in the Bundesliga title race after being held to a 0-0 stalemate at home by Union Berlin, with the visitors extending their unbeaten streak in the league to five matches.
As expected, Leverkusen dominated possession in the first half, nearly finding the net in the opening minute. Jeremie Frimpong surged forward from his wing-back position, creating a bit of space in the box before his shot went narrowly wide.
The home side experienced a moment of panic when Andrej Ilić found the back of the net for Union, only for his goal to be ruled out for offside, much to the relief of the home faithful.
Xabi Alonso’s side continued to search for a goal before half-time, with Patrik Schick also missing the target just past the post around the 30-minute mark. Ultimately, Die Werkself was unable to break the deadlock, which was underlined by their total of just one shot on target.

Alonso brought on a returning Florian Wirtz early in the second half in a bid to turn the tide, and the German nearly made an instant impact by setting up Exequiel Palacios in the box, whose effort forced a fine save from Frederik Rønnow.
Union posed a threat on the counterattack despite Leverkusen’s dominance, with Lukas Hradecky making a comfortable save from Lucas Tousart’s shot. Substitute Benedict Hollerbach then squandered a good opportunity, hitting the ball straight into the goalkeeper’s arms after being played in behind.
Leverkusen continued to push forward, hoping to replicate their late winner against Heidenheim last time out, but they ultimately fell short, placing the pressure squarely on league leaders Bayern Munich, who could extend their lead to eight points with a victory in Der Klassiker.

Union coach Steffen Baumgart will be pleased with the point secured away from home against such notable competitors, as previous concerns over relegation are now virtually eliminated, with Die Eisernen sitting 12 points clear of the relegation zone.
