Danish international striker Mika Biereth, who recently eclipsed Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s goalscoring record shortly after joining AS Monaco from Sturm Graz, revealed in a comprehensive interview with the French publication “L’Equipe” that he doesn’t consider himself one to score those often-highlighted “YouTube goals.”
Biereth has been in exceptional form since his arrival at Sturm Graz in January, leading him to break numerous records in Ligue 1.
The former Arsenal player has become the first individual in the 21st century to net 10 goals in his initial seven matches in Ligue 1, surpassing the previous record set by Swedish icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who achieved nine goals in his first seven encounters with PSG back in 2012.
This achievement marks the first time in 70 years that a player has registered three hat-tricks within their first seven Ligue 1 fixtures.
Moreover, Biereth has established himself as the leading goalscorer across the five major leagues for the year 2025, outpacing Ousmane Dembélé (9), Mateo Retegui (9), and Mohamed Salah (8) with his tally of 10 goals.
In his “L’Equipe” interview, Biereth shared that his knack for finding the back of the net is something he’s always possessed.
“I’ve had a keen eye for goals since I was a child, and I’ve honed that ability continuously,” he explained.
“It’s quite straightforward: Goals win matches, and the more you score, the higher your chances of winning. I recognise that football appreciates the ‘beautiful’ goals, but that’s just not my approach. Trust me, there will never be a YouTube montage showcasing my skills. I adore scoring goals. Who doesn’t?
Biereth emphasised the importance of remaining humble for a young striker, particularly during periods of success.
“It’s a treacherous moment for a young player when they start scoring (goals, ed.), as it can lead to a feeling of invincibility. But in football, things can change rapidly – in both positive and negative directions.”
“Absolutely, it’s nice to feel happy, but don’t get carried away, as you never know how the next match will unfold.”
“Scoring a hat-trick is fantastic, but the joy is fleeting. After a few hours, I try to get some rest and prepare for the next day, as it all begins anew. It’s not hard to stay grounded. My family and friends remind me: ‘Good game, but it was just a football match.’
The 22-year-old striker isn’t shy about drawing comparisons to some of the top strikers in the world, albeit with a grin.
“I’m somewhat like Harry Kane, and he’s a bit like me. He enjoys being in the box and finishing chances, which I truly admire. Kane has a slightly different edge; he can also create opportunities for his teammates. I believe I have that capability too.”
Biereth and AS Monaco will be back in action this Saturday evening as they face Le Havre away. Currently, Monaco sits in third place in Ligue 1.
