It’s not often that you find a Premier League relegation battle carrying such significant stakes.
As West Ham prepares to welcome Wolves on Friday evening, they are acutely aware that a victory would lift them out of the relegation zone, pushing Tottenham into that precarious position instead.
Just three home victories for West Ham in 2025/26
The Lilywhites have a challenging away game against Sunderland scheduled for this weekend. If they are unable to secure all three points, the Hammers will be aware that matching or bettering Spurs’ results from now until the season’s end will guarantee their survival.
However, a win for the Irons is far from a certainty, with their home record in the Premier League this season standing at only three wins, four draws, and eight losses from 15 matches.
Wolves were the first team to record a win against the Hammers this season, a fact that could instill confidence in Rob Edwards’ squad as they seek to end a five-match winless streak at the London Stadium.
The Wolves are currently enduring a 17-match winless streak in Premier League away games, while West Ham has remained unbeaten at home since their loss to Nottingham Forest at the start of January, discounting their penalty shootout defeat to Leeds United last weekend.
Wolves chasing a league double for the first time since 2019/20
If the visitors were to cause an upset, it would mark the first time since the 2019/20 season that they have achieved a league double over West Ham.
Edwards’ turnaround at the club may have come too late, but after suffering 11 consecutive defeats between October and December, Wolves have turned things around, losing only four of their last 13 Premier League fixtures.

To further highlight their improvement, the 15 goals conceded in this period are exceeded only by Manchester City and Arsenal (both 11), as well as Brighton (12).
Wolves have had more success against West Ham in the Premier League than any other club apart from Southampton (nine wins), with the Hammers failing to score in all eight of their defeats to Wolves.
No draws in the last 16 encounters
Out of the last 16 meetings, West Ham has won eight times, ensuring that none ended in a draw.
The most recent six fixtures have resulted in three wins apiece, with at least three goals scored in five of these matches.

It is also noteworthy that the hosts have lost only once in their last six home league games (W1, D4), managing to gain more points during this stretch (seven) than in their initial nine fixtures at the London Stadium this season (six points – W2, L7).
Jarrod Bowen is expected to play a crucial role in West Ham’s bid to extend this streak, and the winger will feel confident about his chances.
Bowen’s importance to West Ham
This is largely due to his impressive tally of six Premier League goals against Wolves, making them his favourite target, with five of those coming in his last five home games against them.
Bowen has also established himself as the team’s key player this season, leading the squad in goals (eight), assists (six), total shots (67), shots on target (23), and chances created (32).
Should Bowen and his teammates find their rhythm, it will be up to the Hammers’ defence to hold firm at the other end. If Bowen is effectively marked, West Ham’s struggles could be exacerbated.
In their latest Premier League match, John McGinn struck for Aston Villa, marking the Hammers’ 17th goal conceded from set-piece situations. No team has conceded more, and another such goal here would see them equal the record for the most set-piece goals conceded in a season (18 in 2002/03).
Goals on the horizon
Joao Gomes has been in fine form, contributing to two goals in his last three Premier League matches, while his 164 interceptions this season puts him as the second-best in the league, behind Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson (259). He could prove to be a nuisance for West Ham’s backline.

This season, Burnley (61 goals) is the only team that has conceded more than Wolves (54) and West Ham (57) in the Premier League. With both clubs recording just four clean sheets each, it’s likely that both attacks will find ample opportunities.
Both teams have also leaked a significant number of late goals this season. More crucially for Edwards and his men is the fact that they have yet to win a game when they concede the opening goal.
