Canada remains unbeaten in their last six encounters (W2, D4) – albeit in friendly matches – after settling for a scoreless draw against fellow 2026 FIFA World Cup contenders Tunisia.
The kick-off in Ontario was postponed by more than an hour due to lightning in the vicinity of BMO Field. However, the home side quickly posed a threat to their opponents, with Tunisia’s goalkeeper Abdelmouhib Chamakh alert enough to thwart Tani Oluwaseyi’s effort at his near post.
Canada’s second foray into the attacking third arrived shortly after, with Nathan Saliba’s header from inside the penalty area sailing over the crossbar. Unfortunately, not all news was positive for the Canadians, as defender Ralph Priso was forced to exit the match due to a concerning hamstring issue.
Nonetheless, Jesse Marsch’s side swiftly resumed their offensive efforts, with Niko Sigur unleashing a powerful long-range shot that was expertly tipped away from danger by the acrobatic Chamakh.
Despite their assertiveness, Canada would have found themselves a goal down at half-time were it not for Liam Millar. Presented with a straightforward chance to slide the ball into an empty net following Sayfallah Ltaief’s precise pass, Elias Saad was left in disbelief as Millar sprinted back to block the winger’s goal-bound strike.
This interruption allowed Tunisia’s manager Sabri Lamouchi to implement two substitutions, notably the scorer of the decisive goal in their recent match against Haiti, Sebastian Tounekti, along with Khalil Ayari.
It took less than a minute for the Paris Saint-Germain prodigy to make his mark on the match, though not in a positive light, as he received an unnecessary yellow card. Despite Canada introducing their own set of substitutes just prior to the hour mark, the trio struggled to break the stalemate.
Ultimately, it was one of Marsch’s substitutes, Ali Ahmed, who recorded the only noteworthy shot on target in a rather uneventful second half, sending an ambitious attempt directly into Chamakh’s hands.
The match ended goalless, and while Canada managed to avoid the defensive missteps they experienced in their previous outing against Iceland, they will need to exhibit far greater creativity in front of goal when they return to BMO Field for the start of their World Cup campaign.
