Bayern Munich’s head coach Vincent Kompany expressed unwavering faith in his team’s prospects, despite their 2-1 defeat at home to Inter Milan in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday.
The home side were strong early on but fell behind when Lautaro Martinez found the net for Inter in the 38th minute.
Thomas Muller, a veteran of the side who was brought on by Kompany in the 74th minute, nearly equalised late in the match. However, Inter struck again on the counter with Davide Frattesi scoring in the 88th minute.
“In the first half, we were in control. We created several clear chances and should have scored more goals,” Kompany remarked to the press.
“While Inter are ahead, we know we need to secure a win in Milan. Results can sometimes be misleading, but this is only half-time,” he added.
“We are confident in our abilities, and it’s unfortunate Inter managed to get that late goal, but we see this as a new opportunity in Milan. We genuinely believe we can achieve a positive result there.“
Bayern forward Harry Kane echoed this sentiment, stating, “there’s still 90 minutes left, and we possess the talent to turn this around.“
“Inter celebrated like they had won the tie, but there’s still everything to play for.“
“We generated enough chances to make an impact, and if we replicate that performance next week, we can definitely turn it around.“
Despite missing key players such as Jamal Musiala, Manuel Neuer, Alphonso Davies, and Dayot Upamecano due to injuries, Kompany made it clear that his team was “not looking for excuses.“
“The result stands as it is, but we believe we can achieve victory in Milan,” the Belgian coach concluded.
This defeat marked Bayern’s first loss at home in 22 Champions League matches, with their last home defeat dating back to 2021.
Currently, the German giants hold a six-point lead over Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, but they are set to face fierce domestic rivals Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, ahead of Wednesday’s return leg in Italy.
