Bayern Munich advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in dramatic style, overcoming Real Madrid with a 4-3 victory at the Allianz Arena, sealing a 6-4 win on aggregate.
Bayern’s slender lead from the first leg was wiped out just 35 seconds into the match when Manuel Neuer ventured outside his area with the ball and misplaced a pass to Arda Guler. The Turkish midfielder capitalised with a stunning strike from 35 yards, finding the net just as Neuer managed to return to his goal.
However, the early setback didn’t deter the home side, who found the equaliser shortly after, with Aleksandar Pavlovic heading Joshua Kimmich’s corner past the struggling Andriy Lunin five minutes later.
For much of the first 25 minutes, Bayern dominated possession, but the clearest opportunity fell to Real Madrid. Kylian Mbappe, after breaking through, saw his effort bravely blocked by Konrad Laimer.
Kimmich was pivotal at another corner in the 27th minute, receiving a pass after a quick set-piece, but his powerful shot was expertly saved by Lunin.
The Ukrainian’s redemption came just two minutes later when Los Blancos won a free-kick from 25 yards. Guler demonstrated his capability to find the net from distance by curling the ball into the top corner, leaving Neuer with no chance.
Once more, Bayern responded emphatically. After Serge Gnabry and Pavlovic had both tested Lunin, Dayot Upamecano slid an incisive pass through to Harry Kane, who took a touch before slotting the ball into the bottom corner to regain Bayern’s aggregate advantage.
In the closing moments of the first half, Vinicius Junior came to the fore.
He first latched onto a long ball from Brahim Diaz, only to see his curling effort strike the top of the crossbar. Moments later, he used his pace down the left flank to set up Mbappe, who calmly rolled the ball into the net, handing Real their third lead of the night.
The hosts nearly levelled the score within a minute of the second half starting had it not been for Jude Bellingham diverting Luis Diaz’s shot wide, with Upamecano then heading over from the resultant corner.
Real Madrid then had a golden chance to take the lead in the tie, but Neuer was equal to Mbappe’s side-footed volley.
Bayern continued to dominate possession, and while Real’s deep defensive setup was effective, they required Lunin’s quick reactions to deny a drive from Michael Olise. However, they posed a danger on the counter, with Federico Valverde forcing a save from Neuer.
As the match moved into the final 15 minutes, Olise’s free-kick from the wing was inexplicably missed by the unmarked Upamecano.
With just four minutes remaining in normal time, Bayern received a significant boost when Eduardo Camavinga was sent off for a second yellow card after throwing the ball away following a foul. It took the Germans less than three minutes to capitalise on their numerical advantage.
Luis Diaz broke through after a clever one-two with Jamal Musiala, and his 20-yard effort took a deflection off Eder Militão, eluding Lunin.
This result marked an impressive 17-match unbeaten streak across all competitions for Bayern, who stylishly set up a thrilling semi-final encounter with Paris Saint-Germain, as Olise netted the winner with the last kick of the match.
For Real Madrid, this marks only their second exit in the quarter-finals in the last 14 tournaments.
