Barcelona seized the opportunity to take the summit of the LaLiga table following a narrow 1-0 win against Rayo Vallecano, capitalising on both Madrid clubs dropping points. This victory marks their 10th triumph in the last 12 encounters.
With the top two sides failing to secure wins over the weekend, Barcelona understood the significance of a win before kick-off to bolster their title ambitions. Hansi Flick’s men were dominant in the first half, searching relentlessly for the opening goal. Raphinha came perilously close, sending a shot just inches wide after collecting Alejandro Balde’s cutback.
A few moments later, Rayo Vallecano were handed a chance to take the lead when Inigo Martínez was fouled in the box by Abdul Mumin.
After a thorough VAR review, Robert Lewandowski confidently converted the penalty, registering his 20th league goal of the season.
Lamine Yamal could have extended Barça’s lead just past the half-hour mark when he capitalised on a loose ball in the box, but his shot was directed straight at Augusto Batalla.
Rayo Vallecano took until the 37th minute to register a shot on target, with Wojciech Szczesny showing his prowess by deflecting Randy Nteka’s attempt around the post.
The visitors nearly shocked the Barcelona faithful just before the break as Jorge de Frutos broke free and scored, only for the goal to be disallowed after Nteka was deemed offside and interfering with a defender.

Flick would certainly have expected a response from his team after Rayo came perilously close to equalising before the break.
And he nearly got his wish within ten minutes of the second half, as Pedri embarked on a brilliant run into the area, only for Lewandowski to drag his cutback wide.
The away side started to exert more influence in the match, managing to contain their hosts for a large portion of the second half. It wasn’t until the 71st minute that Barça managed to trouble Batalla again, with Raphinha following up on a rebound, only to be denied by a remarkable save from the goalkeeper.
Raphinha continued to threaten, drawing closer to scoring when he broke through on goal but sent his delicate attempt soaring over the bar. Despite the home side’s sustained pressure, a second goal proved elusive.
Instead, Flick had to endure a tense finish as Rayo sought to level the score, but Barcelona held firm to secure the victory. This result leaves the Catalans equal on points with Real Madrid while halting Rayo’s impressive run of three consecutive wins.
