Mikel Arteta challenged Arsenal to “demonstrate our true character” following their unexpected 2-1 defeat to Championship side Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday.
Arteta’s team found themselves behind after Ross Stewart’s opening goal in a lively first half at St Mary’s, but Viktor Gyokeres came off the bench to draw level for the Gunners in the second half.
Arsenal struggled significantly with key players including England internationals Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka sidelined due to injury, and Brazil’s Gabriel Magalhaes left the pitch with a knee issue.
The Gunners were dealt another blow in the 85th minute when Shea Charles found the net with Southampton’s winning goal from just outside the penalty area.
Arteta expressed his disappointment with the team’s lacklustre display, particularly emphasising their poor defensive efforts.
“We conceded the first goal in a way that’s quite unusual for us, and the second came from a direct play situation as well,” he remarked.
“We didn’t handle the long balls well enough, allowing the opposition to play through us. It’s hard to explain but they deserve credit.”
“Despite having significant possession in and around the penalty area, we missed two major opportunities and should have taken advantage of them. However, making the defensive mistakes we did today makes it extremely difficult to reach the semi-finals.”
Arsenal’s ambitions for a first FA Cup victory since 2020— which marked their last major trophy— were dashed on a gusty south coast.
The Premier League leaders have seen their aspirations for a quadruple and treble crushed following a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the League Cup final and now, this disappointing exit against Southampton.
“You’ve got to adjust to the wind, injuries, and all the challenges the season throws at you. Now, it’s time to prove our resilience,” Arteta added.
Having previously compared the agony of the League Cup final defeat to “a ball of poison” in his stomach, the undesirable FA Cup exit will likely leave the Spaniard seeking relief.
‘High Expectations’
Arsenal’s fifth defeat of the season marked the first instance where they have lost consecutive games across competitions in the current campaign.
With little time to recover, they are set to face Sporting CP in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday before continuing their push for a first Premier League title in 22 years.
The north London club currently holds a nine-point advantage over second-placed City in the title chase.
“Throughout the season, there will be challenging periods, for various reasons. We’ve recently experienced two very disappointing results, and now we need to regroup,” Arteta stated.
“This season has always felt like this, especially when the expectations for our team are so high.”
“No one is going to set higher demands and standards than us, that’s for sure.”
Southampton’s unforgettable victory came exactly 50 years after they shocked Manchester United in the FA Cup final, a milestone they honoured by donning yellow and blue strips against Arsenal in this latest upset.
“That’s more of a narrative for the media,” manager Tonda Eckert remarked regarding the links to Bobby Stokes and the Southampton heroes of 1976.
“We put in a solid performance today. It was a challenge, and we knew it would be a tough match. The second half presented opportunities to turn the tide, and we responded well.”
Having previously overcome Fulham in the fifth round, the Saints are now set for a semi-final return at Wembley for the first time since 2021.
However, Eckert’s side has another Wembley target in sight as they also chase a place in the Championship play-offs, with an important clash against Wrexham scheduled for Tuesday.
“The belief is always there; it has not been an issue. The reality is that the next game is close. We can celebrate today, but we must focus on Wrexham and our Championship campaign tomorrow,” Eckert concluded.
