Arne Slot acknowledges that Liverpool must deliver a “remarkable” performance if they are to overturn their 2-0 deficit against Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday.
Slot’s team is on the verge of elimination by PSG for the second consecutive season following a lacklustre showing in Paris last week.
Liverpool failed to register a single shot on goal at Parc des Princes, and Slot conceded that they must significantly elevate their game to surprise Luis Enrique’s side at Anfield.
“We recognise that we need an extraordinary performance to progress to the next round, but that’s expected when you’re up against the champions of Europe,” Slot remarked to the media on Monday.
“Out of the 49 home matches we’ve played under my management, we’ve scored two goals or more in 36 of them.
“While I understand that we haven’t faced PSG in all those games, the Premier League and Champions League opponents we have encountered were exceptionally strong.
“So, we have faith that we can achieve something special tomorrow, but it will require us to be incredibly, incredibly, incredibly special.”
Slot has faced increasing scrutiny in light of Liverpool’s disappointing defence of their Premier League title and their humiliating FA Cup quarter-final exit following a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City.
After enduring three consecutive losses to Brighton, City, and PSG, Liverpool alleviated some of the criticism, albeit briefly, with a 2-0 victory over Fulham on Saturday.
However, a tame exit from the Champions League would heighten the pressure on Slot ahead of Sunday’s Merseyside derby against Everton.
‘Start aggressive’
Slot understands that Liverpool must put forth a much stronger effort than they did in Paris, where they struggled to maintain possession and rarely threatened the PSG defence.
“We are up against the champions of Europe, making the task more challenging but not impossible,” he stated.
“For now, let’s focus on the task at hand, start aggressively, and make sure we can get back into the tie.
“Saturday’s match illustrated the importance of scoring… just moments later, we netted a second. That’s the nature of football – a goal can shift momentum, as we experienced negatively at Manchester City.”
While Slot faced criticism for Liverpool’s passive display in the first leg, the Reds’ manager asserted that his side could triumph with a similar strategy at Anfield.
“It might be hard for some to understand, but our approach tomorrow won’t differ much from Paris. Those who know me are aware I would never instruct them to sit back defensively for 90 minutes,” he explained.
“You could see us pressing them high on several occasions. Unfortunately, seven or eight of those instances resulted in one-on-one situations with our goalkeeper.
“In our last encounter, they controlled 76 percent of possession, so that’s the first aspect we must adjust tomorrow – we need to dominate the ball more.
“If we can do that, it’s advantageous to have an attacking threat on the pitch, and that’s exactly what we plan to bring tomorrow.”
