Real Madrid secured their third successive LaLiga away victory, edging past Getafe with a narrow 1-0 result. This win keeps their title hopes alive and narrows the gap to league leaders Barcelona to just four points.
With Saturday’s Copa del Rey final against Barcelona in sight, Carlo Ancelotti opted to make six alterations to the side that triumphed over Athletic Club just three days prior for this brief jaunt to the outskirts of Madrid.
Jose Bordalas’ team was not intimidated by their more illustrious rivals and nearly took an early lead when Luis Milla forced a sharp save from Thibaut Courtois.
The contest showcased a lively back-and-forth, with Borja Mayoral heading wide from a Juan Iglesias cross, prior to Fran Garcia being thwarted by David Soria after a swift counterattack.
Los Blancos didn’t have to wait long to find the net, as Arda Guler unleashed a brilliant long-range effort after Getafe failed to clear their lines.
Endrick came close to doubling Real’s advantage shortly after, following a slick one-two with Vinicius Junior, but Djené, the captain for Azulones, was on hand to clear the Brazilian’s shot off the line.
Immediately after the break, two of Getafe’s substitutes sought to level the scores, with Real loanee Álvaro Rodríguez meeting a cross from Coba da Costa with a stunning header that narrowly grazed the top of the net. Ancelotti’s men pushed forward in search of a second goal, prompting Soria to make an excellent save to deny Brahim Díaz.
Vinicius Junior was relentless down the left flank, nearly earning a goal for his hard work. He cut inside and had a decent right-footed strike sail just over the bar. However, the hosts looked dangerous on the counter, and Bordalás couldn’t hide his disappointment as Mauro Arambarri missed the target following Mayoral’s inviting cross from the left.
In the end, Real managed to see the game through in a rather unremarkable manner, clinching back-to-back league victories ahead of their clash with Hansi Flick’s team in Seville this weekend. However, not all was well as Ancelotti will be concerned about the condition of Eduardo Camavinga, who left the pitch late due to what appeared to be a groin injury.
In other news, Bordalás remains winless in all 15 of his LaLiga encounters as a manager against Los Blancos (D2, L13), with Getafe still sitting 12th after claiming just one home league win in their last eight matches (D2, L5).
