The Adelaide Crows have officially commenced construction on their cutting-edge facility at Thebarton, more than ten years after the initial plans were unveiled. However, the ambitious project has faced yet another hurdle.
Originally expected to be completed by September 2023, the new home of the Crows has suffered from cost overruns and construction delays. It now won’t be ready until at least February 2027 due to objections from local residents and lengthy contract negotiations.
Despite being a devoted Port Adelaide fan, Premier Peter Malinauskas set aside his football loyalties to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony.
“As the Labor premier and a passionate Port supporter, I’m here to endorse a $25 million investment alongside [Crows chairman and Liberal Party president] John Olsen for the Adelaide Crows,” Malinauskas remarked.

Olsen expressed that securing the contract negotiations was crucial for the club’s future.
“It was essential for us to conclude the negotiations and ensure a fixed-price contract to protect the club from unreasonable cost escalations,” Olsen noted.
The club is also pursuing a $20 million loan to cover the remaining expenses of the project, but Olsen assures that this will not endanger the club’s financial health.
Players are simply eager to be back on the field when the facility is finally completed.
“We’ve been hearing about this for a considerable time,” remarked AFLW star Ebony Marinoff.
“Chelsea Randall keeps nudging me, saying it needs to speed up so she can get there.”
