Ghana is set to make its fifth appearance on the global stage at the 2026 World Cup, marking a full twenty years since the Black Stars first featured in this prestigious tournament.
The nation has previously participated in the FIFA World Cup four times: in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022.
Their most remarkable performance came in 2010 in South Africa, where Asamoah Gyan’s pivotal goals propelled them to the quarter-finals. Sadly, a notorious handball by Luis Suárez and the resulting missed penalty prevented Ghana from progressing to the semi-finals, solidifying that match as one of the most heartbreaking moments in World Cup history.
During the 2022 tournament held in Qatar, Mohammed Kudus shone brightly, netting twice despite Ghana’s exit during the group stage. The Black Stars will be eager to seize the opportunity in North America and craft a more memorable narrative.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, running from June 11 to July 19, with the final match scheduled at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Ghana aspires to either match or exceed their historic quarter-final run from 2010.

Where will Ghana play their FIFA World Cup matches?
Ghana‘s World Cup journey will commence on June 17 against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto, Canada. This stadium, referred to as Toronto Stadium during the tournament to comply with FIFA’s naming policy, has had its capacity increased to 45,736 specifically for the World Cup, making it the smallest venue in the tournament. Nevertheless, it retains the distinction of being the only dedicated soccer stadium in the United States or Canada to be designated as a host venue.
On June 23, Ghana and England will compete at the Gillette Stadium, situated in Foxborough, Massachusetts, and will operate under the name Boston Stadium for World Cup 2026 matches. The stadium’s capacity for the tournament will be around 65,000 for its seven matches.
Ghana will conclude their group stage against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field, known as Philadelphia Stadium during the tournament. This venue can normally accommodate 67,594 supporters and serves as the home ground for the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL. Located in South Philadelphia, Lincoln Financial Field will also host a range of prominent teams throughout the tournament, including Brazil, France, and Ivory Coast.
Ghana’s FIFA World Cup Knockout Schedule
If Ghana tops Group L, they will progress to face the third-placed team from Group E, H, I, J, or K in the Round of 32.
Should they finish as runners-up in the group, their next challenge will be against the runners-up of Group K. A third-place finish may also suffice for advancement, as long as Ghana ranks among the eight best third-placed teams across all twelve groups.
The knockout stage is set to commence from June 28 and will conclude with the final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Ghana’s FIFA World Cup Preparation
In preparation for the tournament, Ghana has undergone a period of significant transformation. Carlos Queiroz was appointed as the new head coach in April, following Otto Addo’s dismissal, and he has been entrusted with the responsibility of steering the Black Stars towards at least a quarter-final finish.
Prior to this coaching change, the Black Stars faced challenges against Austria and Germany during March’s international fixtures. They will now wrap up their preparations with warm-up matches against Mexico and Wales before heading to North America.
The planned warm-up games are as follows:
Friday, March 27: Austria – Ghana (5-1)
Monday, March 30: Germany – Ghana (2-1)
Friday, May 22: Mexico – Ghana (20:00 GMT, Puebla)
Tuesday, June 2: Wales – Ghana (12:00 GMT, Cardiff)
Details regarding Ghana’s last friendly match ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States are yet to be finalised.
