Danish national team coach Brian Riemer outlines three key factors behind Denmark’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
Following that heartbreaking night in Prague nearly a month ago, when Denmark’s chance for World Cup qualification slipped away in a penalty shootout, national coach Brian Riemer has been grappling with a profound sense of disbelief.
In his quest to understand the reasons behind the national team’s inability to secure a World Cup spot—having missed three crucial qualification opportunities—Riemer has conducted a thorough analysis.
In an interview with TV 2 Sport and Bold.dk, he identified three primary causes.
To begin with, he noted that the players did not display the necessary sharpness in the pivotal moments that define football matches. This leads into the second reason: Denmark’s poor performance on set pieces.
“We were hoping to leverage this area as an advantage, yet we fell short, and it proved to be a critical factor. I take full responsibility for that,” Riemer stated.
The third issue he highlighted was the lack of continuity within the squad. Riemer believes he has been compelled to undergo a significant “generational shift” due to injuries, illnesses, and suspensions, among other factors.
Moving forward, he expresses a desire to maintain stability in the team leading up to the Nations League this autumn.
“At this moment, this team is in desperate need of continuity. There have been too many changes. A national squad requires players who can build solid relationships, which occurs when they frequently play together. Unfortunately, creating those connections during the qualification phase has been challenging,” Riemer remarked.
After the penalty shootout loss in the crucial playoff against the Czech Republic in Prague, Riemer made it clear that he had no intentions of resigning from his position.
“That position remains unchanged,” he emphasised, noting that he has not even contemplated such a decision.
Denmark’s next challenges will come in June, as Riemer’s squad is set to compete in two friendly matches against yet-to-be-named opponents.
