Inter Milan edged closer to the Serie A title after a 2-2 stalemate against Torino, despite squandering a two-goal lead. This draw extended Inter’s advantage to 10 points over SSC Napoli. With only four matches left to play, securing just three more points would mathematically secure the Scudetto.
Inter had the first significant opportunity of the match, with Manuel Akanji heading just wide following a well-executed set piece. Their initial shot on target also came from a header, but Yann Bisseck’s effort failed to trouble Alberto Paleari in the Torino goal.
The scoring was unlocked in the 23rd minute when Marcus Thuram connected with a beautifully lofted cross from Federico Dimarco, directing a firm header into the net.
Torino made it to half-time without a single shot on target, showcasing Inter’s dominance. The second half saw more of the same, with Paleari making a crucial save to deny Dimarco a second goal just after the restart, followed by a last-ditch block from a rebound attempt by Matteo Darmian.
The partnership between Dimarco and Thuram nearly paid dividends once again, though the latter’s shot was deflected out for a corner after a clever pass slipped behind the defence.
Set pieces have proven valuable for Cristian Chivu’s team this season, and Dimarco wasn’t going to miss out on adding to his assist tally.
Incredibly, he increased his total to 18 assists for the season—setting a new record for the most by a player in a single Serie A campaign—with a precise corner that found Bisseck, who headed home to extend the lead.
However, Giovanni Simeone turned the tide in the 70th minute, scoring after a well-worked combination play.
This goal shifted the momentum, as Simeone narrowly missed the target again shortly after, while Yan Sommer was finally forced into action, saving an impressive strike from Alieu Njie.
The dramatic shift in the game’s flow resulted in a penalty for Torino after a VAR review deemed Carlos Augusto guilty of a handball from close range.
Nikola Vlasic converted the penalty, and the teams shared the spoils, with Torino coming closest to stealing a win in the dying moments.
This marked just the second occasion in 15 matches that the Granata have avoided defeat against Inter, although they remain mired in mid-table. Nevertheless, despite this unexpected setback, Inter can still clinch the title next weekend with a victory against Parma.
