Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Xavi Simons has been sidelined from the FIFA World Cup following a torn ACL sustained during Saturday’s narrow 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, as confirmed by the club.
Simons was in a tussle with Wolves’ full-back Hugo Bueno when he collapsed, clutching his knee and expressing his pain vocally. Although the medical team assessed him and initially allowed him to return to the pitch, he ultimately had to be carried off on a stretcher.
Subsequent examinations confirmed the tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in Simons’ right knee, which will keep him out of action for as long as 12 months, eliminating any chance of participating in the upcoming FIFA World Cup set to take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
“They say life can be cruel, and today it certainly feels that way,“ Simons remarked in an Instagram post announcing the devastating news. “My season has come to an abrupt halt, and I’m struggling to come to terms with it. It’s truly heartbreaking. None of this seems fair.
“All I’ve ever wanted was to fight for my team, and now that opportunity has been ripped away from me, along with the World Cup. The chance to represent my country this summer is gone… It’s going to take time to find peace with this, but I promise I’ll continue to support my teammates to the best of my ability. I am confident we will overcome this challenge together.“
The 23-year-old Dutch international had just found his groove at Spurs, netting twice and providing an assist in his last five matches for the Lilywhites. In 28 appearances in the Premier League, Simons has contributed 2 goals and 5 assists after making a move from RB Leipzig for a reported fee of €65 million.
Injury Woes
Simons’ injury is yet another headache for Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman, especially with the FIFA World Cup only 45 days away.
Koeman has been grappling with a number of player absences, including stars like Frenkie de Jong, Emmanuel Emegha, Memphis Depay, Ryan Gravenberch, Robin Roefs, Matthijs de Ligt, Mark Flekken, and Jeremie Frimpong during March’s friendly matches against Ecuador and Norway.
PSV’s captain, Jerdy Schouten, has also been ruled out for the World Cup due to an ACL tear he sustained in early April, while De Ligt and Memphis are scrambling to recover in time for the tournament.
The Netherlands is set to face Japan, Sweden, and Tunisia in Group F at the World Cup, with their opening match scheduled for Sunday, June 14th, against Japan.
