A controversial ruling from the ARC that granted a mark to St Kilda over a minute after the initial play has ignited fury within the AFL community.
The contentious and delayed decision took place during a match where the Saints were in complete control, demolishing the West Coast Eagles by a staggering margin of over a hundred points at the MCG.
St Kilda dominated the encounter, providing their home supporters with an exhilarating display, finishing with a decisive score of 22.11 (143) to 5.12 (42).
The perplexing incident occurred midway through the second quarter.
Rowan Marshall of St Kilda seemed to have taken a mark near the boundary, yet the on-field umpires did not award it at the time. After a full 33 seconds of uninterrupted play, the ARC intervened, abruptly stopping the match and negating all recent action.
Following a review that lasted over a minute, the ARC overturned the on-field decision, sending Marshall back to the goal line for a set shot from an angle, which resulted in a goal.

“Seriously, a minute and a half to make a decision? Are you joking?” remarked Ben Dixon during the Fox Footy commentary.
“They should have a window of 30 to 45 seconds to make a call—no more than that. Just let it go.”
“It seemed as though the ball was controlled over the line. But to call the play back? I can’t wrap my head around that. Even though it led to a goal for St Kilda, increasing their lead to 21 points, it’s still embarrassing when you think about it.”
“That was inconclusive. We wasted a minute and a half of play.
“If you’re going to make a call, it has to be definitive, and you should have at least 15 to 20 seconds to register that on the review.”
“That is outrageous… unless there’s another angle we haven’t seen, that is a truly poor decision,” added Cameron Mooney.
“For a ball that appeared to be almost completely over the line, there shouldn’t have been a mark awarded at all.”
“This is as strange as anything we’ve ever witnessed in AFL football,” commented Dwayne Russell.
This incident comes at a time when the ARC is already under significant scrutiny from supporters and analysts alike.
The system faced heavy backlash after the AFL’s ARC doctor wrongly ordered Tom Edwards off the field due to a suspected concussion, intensifying the debate regarding the centre’s effectiveness and its influence on the game’s flow.
