The 99th Mashemeji derby in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League is set to take place on Sunday, April 26th, and is pivotal in determining the outcome of the 2025-26 Premier League title race.
Record champions Gor Mahia are gearing up to take on their arch-rivals, AFC Leopards, at Nyayo Stadium, determined to avenge their earlier 1-0 defeat from the first leg.
If Gor Mahia secures a victory, they will create a five-point lead at the summit of the 18-team league standings.
However, a win for AFC Leopards would not only elevate them above Gor Mahia but also allow them to complete a historic double over their fierce adversaries.
With only five matches left to conclude the season, Gor Mahia currently sits atop the table with 58 points, just two points clear of the second-placed AFC Leopards.
Gor Mahia boasts a record of 17 wins, seven draws, and four losses, while AFC Leopards, under the guidance of coach Fred Ambani, have tallied 16 wins, seven draws, and five defeats.
When is the derby and how to watch?
This Matchday 29 clash will unfold on Sunday, April 26th, at Nyayo National Stadium.
The match will be broadcast live on Tanzania’s Pay TV Channel Azam TV, partners of the FKF, on Azam Sports 4HD, starting at 13:00hrs.
Coaches’ comments
In the lead-up to the derby, Gor Mahia’s assistant coach, Bismark Kobi-Mensah, expressed the team’s concerns about facing their competitors at this juncture.
“This Mashemeji Derby is a significant and challenging game. We have struggled recently, going three matches without a win or even a goal, which is a huge concern for us. We’re working hard to improve that aspect,” Kobi-Mensah shared with Azam TV.
“It’s a match that demands a calm mindset and tactical readiness. In our previous derby, we faced some challenging moments, particularly in the opening ten minutes when the players didn’t seem mentally prepared.”
Kobi-Mensah continued: “We have analysed AFC Leopards, understanding their strengths and weaknesses, and now we must prepare and be ready for the challenge ahead.”
AFC Leopards’ coach Ambani has urged his squad to recover from their recent setback against the law enforcement team, stressing the importance of clinching the derby win.
“We must strategise on how to secure the derby victory, as that’s our primary focus now. The players need to realise that while this setback is disappointing, there’s still a chance for redemption,” Ambani remarked.
The initial encounter on December 7th, 2025, saw AFC Leopards break a five-match winless streak against Gor Mahia, winning by 1-0.
The last occasion Ingwe triumphed over K’Ogalo was during the first clash of the 2023 season, where they emerged victorious with a 2-1 scoreline.
Form Analysis
As Gor Mahia faces AFC Leopards, they are eager to snap a three-match winless streak. Following a 2-1 victory against Shabana FC, Gor Mahia has failed to claim triumph in their last three outings.
Since their win against Shabana, Gor Mahia drew 0-0 with Kariobangi Sharks, followed by a 1-0 loss to Tusker and another 0-0 stalemate against Bandari FC.
Conversely, AFC Leopards saw their three-match winning streak come to a halt with a 3-0 loss to Kenya Police FC.
Prior to that defeat, AFC Leopards claimed victories over Tusker (1-0), Kariobangi Sharks (1-0), and Murang’a Seal (2-0). Out of the 98 derbies contested to date, Gor Mahia has achieved 34 wins, with 35 draws, whilst AFC Leopards has secured 29 victories.
Ticketing Details
AFC Leopards, as the home side, have stated that no tickets will be available for purchase on match day, and parking will not be permitted at the venue.
Gor Mahia’s chairman, Ambrose Rachier, has requested that AFC Leopards consider reducing ticket prices to encourage greater attendance. Regular terrace tickets are priced at Sh300, while VIP tickets will cost Sh1,000.
These prices have been established by AFC Leopards, who last clinched the Kenyan top-flight league title in the 1998-99 season.
“We should aim to make ticketing more accessible to draw in larger crowds. Given the current economic climate, it’s not particularly conducive,” Rachier commented.
In last season’s initial clash, the two sides played out a 0-0 draw, while the return match also ended in a stalemate with a score of 1-1. However, in the 2024-25 season, Gor Mahia left the derby victorious, securing a double over their rivals.
During the first round of that season, Gor Mahia triumphed 2-0 and followed it up with a narrow 1-0 victory in the return fixture, ultimately seizing their record 21st league title.
