A domestic cricket encounter in the West Indies has been called off due to hazardous pitch conditions, following an incident where a player was hospitalised after being struck on the head by a delivery. The player reacted by kicking his helmet in frustration after the blow (see the video above).
The match featured Leeward Islands against Trinidad & Tobago at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, where the pitch had become dangerously unplayable by the third day.
Jeremiah Louis, a player for the Leeward Islands, was taken to hospital after sustaining a possible concussion when a length ball hit him on the helmet.

Jayden Seales, the bowler, had delivered a length ball that reared off the pitch, striking Louis directly in the face.
Fuming, Louis quickly sprung up after the incident, angrily kicking his helmet away as a short leg fielder narrowly dodged the incoming flying object.
The unfortunate player was taken off via stretcher and swiftly transported to the hospital for evaluation. Subsequently, Cricket West Indies confirmed that he had been cleared of serious injuries after undergoing a CT scan.
At that point in the match, Seales had been in remarkable form, having claimed all seven wickets as the Leeward Islands reached a score of 7-140.
The four-day fixture was officially declared a draw and subsequently abandoned, with Cricket West Indies releasing a statement addressing the matter.
“After consultations with the curator, it was ascertained that the pitch could not be safely restored without granting an unfair advantage and was therefore ruled unfit for play, leading to the abandonment of the match as a draw,” the statement detailed.
“Both teams will receive the points accrued up to the point of abandonment, in accordance with the championship’s regulations.”

Leeward Islands coach Wilden Cornwall shared his disappointment regarding the pitch conditions in the days that followed.
“It seems to me that the pitch did not receive the proper preparation for a four-day match, which has resulted in so many players suffering injuries… The pitch has been problematic throughout the three days,” he commented.
Cornwall noted that Louis was being treated in hospital and expressed hope for his recovery, saying, “I just wish him a swift recovery with no severe damage. It was incredibly distressing to witness what unfolded this morning.”
On the other side, Trinidad & Tobago’s coach Rayad Emrit echoed the sentiment of frustration, suggesting that the match should have been abandoned after the first day.
The venue is scheduled to host the West Indies Championship final in May, and significant improvements are necessary to ensure the pitch is in suitable condition. Cricket West Indies has stated that addressing this issue is a top priority.
Jeremiah Louis, 30, has participated in 62 first-class matches, claiming 155 wickets and accumulating 1,624 runs at an average of 21.94.
