Chelsea has suffered an extraordinary fourth consecutive home defeat in the Premier League (PL) for the first time since 1998, falling 1-0 to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, a result that keeps United firmly in the top three.
Both teams entered this encounter following disappointing PL losses, not the ideal lead-up to a crucial match as both sought to secure a spot in the UEFA Champions League.
Chelsea, in particular, was keen to earn points after managing just one win from their last seven home fixtures, and they appeared more dangerous throughout a cautious opening half.

Estêvão nearly broke the deadlock with a stunning curl that struck the post from outside the box, marking his only notable contribution before he had to exit due to injury.
Enzo Fernández then came close, shooting just wide from inside the area as Chelsea seemed to gain momentum, until the visitors capitalised with their only shot on target during the half when Matheus Cunha slotted home after a tidy cutback from Bruno Fernandes.
In the second half, the pressure was firmly on Chelsea to attack if they wished to remain in contention for a top-four finish.
And they responded, hitting the woodwork twice with balls into the box.
First, Delap’s header crashed against the upright, followed shortly after by Noussair Mazaraoui’s effort that was deemed offside after brushing against Wesley Fofana’s hand.
Cole Palmer also fashioned an opportunity that went wide, but despite their efforts, the anticipated Chelsea surge never materialised.
Moisés Caicedo came agonisingly close to finding the bottom corner late in the match, yet the Red Devils held their ground comfortably, maintaining their slender lead.

This result intensifies the pressure on Liam Rosenior, who may now need to shift his focus towards qualifying for an alternative European competition instead of the UCL, due to the growing competition behind them.
On the other hand, United has established a 10-point cushion over Chelsea, thanks to their rare PL double over the Blues, with interim manager Michael Carrick earning more accolades for his efforts since taking over from Ruben Amorim earlier this season.
