Lorient has officially guaranteed their Ligue 1 place for the upcoming season following a 2-0 victory over Olympique de Marseille, who may find themselves outside of Europe if results don’t favour them this weekend.
Having entered the match on a three-game winless run (2 draws, 1 loss), Les Merlus nearly took an early lead when Panos Katseris was played through, forcing a save from Geronimo Rulli. Shortly after, L’OM had their best chance of the first half; a header fell to Mason Greenwood, but Yvon Mvogo was on hand to deny him, keeping Greenwood one goal adrift in the race for the golden boot.
The home side appeared more lively in front of their supporters and took the lead midway through the first half. Bamba Dieng skillfully controlled a long ball, and after it was deflected towards Katseris, the young striker made no mistake in finding the net past Rulli.

Marseille showed more attacking intent at the start of the second half, with Timothy Weah, Himad Abdelli, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang all having attempts within the first ten minutes.
However, they struggled to penetrate the Lorient defence, with Mvogo continuing to impress. L’OM were soon left to rue their missed opportunities as Pablo Pagis supplied a delightful pass to Bamba Dieng, who expertly chipped Rulli to extend Lorient’s lead.
This marked the ninth league goal of the season for Dieng, eclipsing his previous tally while at Marseille.
Pagis nearly got on the scoresheet later on but was thwarted by Rulli, as none of the substitutes for the visitors could make a difference. Consequently, Marseille dropped to their third defeat in four games and their tenth overall this season.
This defeat continues to highlight their dire away form, marking their fourth loss in their last five matches away from Stade Velodrome. In contrast, Lorient remains unbeaten at home in the league for 14 matches (8 wins, 6 draws), keeping them in ninth place in the standings.
