Jannik Vestergaard, the 33-year-old central defender for Leicester, announced on Friday evening that he has chosen to retire from international football.
The seasoned defender shared insights about his decision during an interview with Danish publication Politiken, revealing that he has deliberated on this choice extensively of late.
“I’ve always aimed to bow out at the right moment. For me, that time feels right now,” Vestergaard stated.
Brian Riemer, the Danish national team coach, regards Vestergaard as possessing a formidable character and strong leadership qualities. He also emphasised the central defender’s “clear and consistent” attributes on the pitch.
Riemer noted that Vestergaard’s participation in the 2021 European Championship, where Denmark made it to the semi-finals, stands out as a significant highlight of his international career. He also fondly recalled Denmark’s triumph over Portugal in the Nations League in 2025.
The coach pointed out that Vestergaard effectively neutralised superstar Cristiano Ronaldo during Denmark’s 1-0 win at Parken Stadium in the Nations League.
“He completely erased Ronaldo that day,” Riemer asserted.
Vestergaard missed Denmark’s two playoff matches for World Cup qualification earlier in March due to a groin operation.
After Denmark’s loss in the crucial match against the Czech Republic, Vestergaard decided to step away, with EURO 2028 still two years away.
He expressed that he does not envision himself fitting into the new project that involves several young talents, as he told Politiken.
This past autumn, Vestergaard participated in two underwhelming World Cup qualifiers against Belarus and Scotland, where Denmark had the opportunity to secure a place in the World Cup finals.
Vestergaard reflected on his time with the national team as the greatest honour of his career and life since making his debut in 2013.
Having been with Leicester since 2021, Vestergaard has accumulated a total of 59 caps for the Danish national team.
