Liverpool’s French forward, Hugo Ekitike, will be unavailable for the remainder of the season and the World Cup after sustaining a ruptured Achilles tendon, the Premier League side confirmed on Thursday.
The 23-year-old had to be substituted during the first half of Liverpool’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield on Tuesday, having slipped on the pitch. Liverpool suffered a 2-0 defeat, exiting the competition with a 4-0 aggregate loss.
Subsequent scans have verified the seriousness of the injury, with Liverpool announcing that Ekitike will be out for the remainder of the season.
This injury will also see him miss out on the upcoming World Cup, as confirmed by France manager Didier Deschamps on Wednesday.
“Further updates will be communicated in due course, with Hugo receiving comprehensive support from everyone at LFC,” the club stated.
Ekitike made the move to Liverpool in July from Eintracht Frankfurt and has emerged as the club’s leading scorer this season, netting 17 goals across all competitions, including 11 in the Premier League. He has also scored two goals for France in eight appearances.
