Kenya’s women’s national football team head coach, Beldine Odemba, expressed her admiration for the Harambee Starlets, despite their 2-0 loss to Australia in the FIFA Series final held at Nyayo Stadium on Wednesday.
The East African team entered the FIFA Series eager to measure themselves against top-tier opposition, successfully defeating India 2-0 in their opening match, which led them to face off against Australia, who had convincingly beaten Malawi 5-0 in their first encounter.
Even though Kenya fought valiantly in the final, they were ultimately edged out after Chelsea striker Sam Kerr scored the opening goal, with Clare Wheeler securing Australia’s victory.
Kenya had several opportunities to score but failed to convert. They appeared stronger in the early stages of the game, though they were thwarted by goalkeeper Joe Montemurro, who was instrumental in keeping Australia competitive.
Kenya’s Confidence Ahead of WAFCON
Kenya aimed to utilise the FIFA Series as part of their preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled to take place in Morocco, which will also serve as a qualifying pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“This is our first experience playing against a team from outside Africa, and we are pleased to have faced such a strong opponent. The girls did exceptionally well, creating multiple chances, and now we fully understand the need to enhance our finishing,” Odemba remarked.
She also added: “Our strategy now is to convert every chance into a goal.”
Regarding the future benefits of the FIFA Series, Odemba stated: “We, as a coaching staff, have great confidence in our team. We intend to go to WAFCON and perform considerably well.
“The FIFA Series has allowed us to assess our strengths and weaknesses, and I am truly proud of the girls’ performance; we feel ready for WAFCON.”
Odemba concluded: “My admiration extends to the entire squad, not just the central defenders. They played cohesively and gave their all; we genuinely believe we have shaped a team prepared for WAFCON.”
Australia’s Coach Acknowledges Tough Opposition
Australia’s coach, Joe Montemurro, praised Kenya as being a solid and well-organised opponent, acknowledging that the Starlets provided the challenging competition his team sought during the FIFA Series.
“Kenya is an impressive side and is very well structured. We came here to play under these circumstances to gain insights into African football and to face potential surprises, complemented by enthusiastic fans, and we got exactly what we needed,” Montemurro explained.
He added: “Kenya was fantastic; we were in search of a challenging opponent, which is why we are here. It’s a learning experience that aids in our development.
“We must be ready for anything that comes our way, even if that means missing opportunities, which is often part of international football.”
Kerr, a key player for Australia, shared her enjoyment of playing in Nairobi, despite the unfamiliar conditions.
“The Kenyan people are incredibly warm and welcoming, and I look forward to returning the favour,” Kerr expressed. “We genuinely enjoyed our time here. The matches were challenging, and the conditions were quite different for us, but ultimately, it was a valuable experience.”
The Harambee Starlets have been placed in Group C for the WAFCON alongside hosts Morocco, Senegal, and Algeria, promising a fiercely competitive tournament.
Kenya qualified for WAFCON by securing a convincing two-legged victory over Gambia in the qualifiers, winning 3-1 in the first leg and sealing their advancement with a 1-0 win in the return leg, for a 4-1 aggregate triumph.
The 2026 edition will mark a significant milestone for the Harambee Starlets, who will return to WAFCON a decade after their inaugural appearance in 2016.
