FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced on Wednesday that Iran will “definitely” be part of the 2026 World Cup, despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
“Iran is definitely coming. We hope that by then the situation will be peaceful, which would certainly be beneficial,” Infantino stated during an interview with broadcaster CNBC.
“Iran’s participation is imperative; they represent their people, they’ve earned their spot, and the players are eager to compete,” he added, referring to the team’s upcoming matches set to take place in the United States in June.
The prospect of Iran’s involvement in the prestigious tournament was cast into uncertainty due to the war with the United States and Israel that ignited on February 28.
“Sports should remain separate from politics,” asserted Infantino.
“If there is no one else who believes in constructing and maintaining bridges between us, we are fulfilling that role,” he emphasised.
The World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, is set to kick off on June 11.
