The recent appointment of Marie-Louise Eta as interim coach of Union Berlin marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first woman to manage a top-tier team in Germany. This momentous occasion is a remarkable step forward for aspiring young girls in football, according to Bayern Munich’s head coach, Vincent Kompany.
On Saturday, Eta made history by taking the reins as the first female coach in Bundesliga history when she was named interim coach at Union Berlin.
“I’m genuinely thrilled about Eta’s appointment,” Kompany expressed during a press conference held ahead of their Champions League fixture against Real Madrid on Wednesday.
“These are pivotal moments. It’s easy to downplay them and say ‘she’s just a coach like anyone else, and that’s how we should regard her as a colleague.’
“But ultimately, this is something remarkably special,” the Belgian commented further.
“It opens up numerous opportunities for young girls currently playing football, enabling them to think, ‘I can coach anywhere, build a genuine career, and achieve success.’ These narratives hold immense significance.”
“I wish her nothing but the best, and I hope that she is not treated as a man would be; rather, I wish for her to receive the patience that the coaching position often lacks from leadership.”
The 34-year-old Eta previously coached Union’s Under-19 team and will take the helm of the club’s women’s team starting next season. She also made history in 2023 as the first female assistant coach in Germany’s top flight with Union Berlin.
In response to the sexist online abuse directed towards Eta following her appointment, Union Berlin condemned such behaviour on Monday, expressing disappointment that the club had to address this form of criticism in 2026 while deeming the discourse as “insane” and “embarrassing.”
