Sunderland has denounced the reported online racist abuse aimed at striker Brian Brobbey following their Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, where they triumphed 1-0.
Brobbey found himself involved in a significant moment during the match when Tottenham skipper Cristian Romero collided with his own goalkeeper, Antonin Kinsky, while under pressure from the Sunderland attacker.
Romero had to leave the pitch in tears, while Kinsky continued the match with a heavily bandaged head.
“We fully and unwaveringly support Brian in this matter,” Sunderland expressed in a statement.
The club noted that such incidents of abuse are not singular, mentioning that Romaine Mundle and Lutsharel Geertruida have also faced similar treatment in recent times.
“The club has reported this incident to the Premier League, the appropriate social media platforms, and the police, and we anticipate prompt action against those responsible,” they stated.
Sunderland has moved up to 10th place in the standings and will take on fourth-placed Aston Villa this Sunday.
