Following Nottingham Forest’s 1-1 draw with Aston Villa in the Premier League at the City Ground on Sunday, feelings of both satisfaction and disappointment lingered. The result edged the home side closer to safety while thwarting the visitors’ aspirations for a crucial win in their chase for Champions League qualification.
Aston Villa will feel a sense of injustice, having taken the lead in the match through an own goal by Forest defender Murillo. They squandered several chances in the second half to secure all three points after Neco Williams restored parity for the hosts.
With sharper finishing, Villa could have claimed a comfortable victory. However, for Forest manager Vitor Pereira, this result marks another step towards avoiding relegation, leaving them three points clear of the drop zone.
“It was a valuable point in a challenging match against a tough opponent,” Pereira remarked to Sky Sports. “Ultimately, I believe that one point is a satisfactory outcome.”
“Villa is a side that’s not easy to control. They create problems, and we endeavoured to counter those while also crafting our own chances. While three points would have been preferable to one, we faced a strong team, and now we are five matches unbeaten across all competitions.”
Pereira was also pleased to welcome back striker Chris Wood from injury, marking his first Premier League outing since October.
“His experience, quality, and knack for scoring are invaluable. He instinctively knows how to find the net. His physical and mental states enable him to be a significant asset to us,” Pereira added.
Aston Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot was thrown into action rather unexpectedly, being informed of his starting role only when first-choice keeper Emi Martinez had to withdraw during the warm-up. Bizot expressed disappointment at not securing the win.
“I had no clue what was unfolding. I saw Emi head inside, and then the goalkeeper coach approached me about 25 minutes before kick-off to get ready for the game,” Bizot explained.
“We came here with the intention to win and gave it our all, but ultimately, we settled for just one point. It’s not enough.
“We pushed our limits, but it proved difficult. They had some moments. We had played well before the goal (from Villa), but our energy levels dipped afterwards, allowing them to build momentum and score.”
“We created chances to net a second goal, but it’s crucial that the ball finds the back of the net. We should have secured all three points.”
