Arne Slot has called on his Liverpool misfires to unite following their woeful 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals, which he believes epitomises their turbulent season.
Slot’s team squandered several early opportunities at the Etihad Stadium before they crumbled, with Erling Haaland netting the opener just before half-time.
Haaland scored again right on the half-time whistle and completed his hat-trick shortly after the break, following a strike from Antoine Semenyo.
Liverpool’s dismal display, which included a missed penalty by Mohamed Salah when the score was already at 4-0, has intensified the scrutiny on Slot after a challenging campaign.
“It’s incredibly disappointing to exit in this manner and with this scoreline. Another major letdown for us,” said Slot, whose side has managed just two wins in their last seven matches.
“The first 35 minutes showcased the type of performance I want to see, but the subsequent 20 minutes revealed we need to defend far better than we did today.”
“Going in at 2-0 just before half-time is tough for morale, especially considering the season we’ve had. That was really hard to swallow.”
In an honest reflection on Liverpool’s struggles, Slot expressed concern about avoiding an even larger defeat ahead of their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.
“The only silver lining was that we didn’t concede more. A 4-0 loss is tough enough for our confidence going into Wednesday, but an even larger defeat would have posed a greater problem for us,” he noted.
“I attempted to rally the team to make it 4-1 or 4-2, but my main focus was ensuring we didn’t concede further.”
The Reds currently sit fifth in the Premier League, their title defence in tatters and their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League looking increasingly uncertain.
‘A Series of Setbacks’
Slot faced chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” from City fans, and while that may be premature, the Dutch manager is certainly under increasing pressure.
Frustration has mounted among Liverpool supporters due to the team’s underwhelming performances. The Champions League now represents their last opportunity for silverware this season, but they face a formidable challenge against the reigning champions, PSG.
Urging his players to rise to the occasion against PSG, who eliminated Liverpool from the Champions League last season, Slot said: “We are eagerly looking forward to facing such a strong team once more.”
“We’ve experienced numerous setbacks and disappointments, but that’s part of being a footballer and a human being. You have to hold your ground when times are tough, and that’s the challenge we face now.”
“Players who have demonstrated immense quality in the past now have a brilliant opportunity to showcase their talents against PSG.”
With City manager Pep Guardiola serving a touchline suspension, his assistant Pep Lijnders handled the media duties after the match.
“Pep is very pleased, which is the most important thing. It’s not easy to keep him satisfied,” said Lijnders.
“In the first 25 minutes, we were too open. Then we started to dominate the match and create more opportunities. Erling’s header was incredible; I love it when a striker leaps to attack the ball. What a fantastic goal.”
City’s eighth consecutive FA Cup semi-final appearance keeps them in the hunt to win the competition for the first time since 2023. They have already celebrated a victory at Wembley this season, having beaten Arsenal 2-0 in the League Cup final just prior to the international break.
“Pep was absolutely delighted because reaching Wembley eight times is special,” Lijnders added. “This is the part of the season where it’s time to get things done. The players feel that pressure.”
