CA Osasuna enhanced their chances of European qualification with a hard-fought 1-0 win over a faltering Sevilla team, whose winless streak has now reached six matches (D1, L5) following this setback at El Sadar.
Joaquín Caparrós’ squad was already feeling the pressure, nervously peering over their shoulders as they remain just five points clear of the relegation zone in LaLiga, a margin that feels perilously slim.
Sevilla had a promising opportunity early on when Diego Hormigo sent an angled shot wide, but those anticipating a flurry of goals would have been disappointed, as the opening 25 minutes were largely uneventful.
However, the match suddenly ignited when Rubén García curled in a brilliantly executed free-kick from a tight angle, leaving Ørjan Nyland with no chance. This marked the 31-year-old’s fourth goal of the season and his second in five days, having scored during a thrilling 3-2 victory against Real Valladolid last Sunday.

As if that wasn’t enough, Sevilla’s woes were compounded just after the half-hour mark when Dodi Lukébakio received a straight red card for elbowing Alejandro Catena, meaning he would not break his six-game goal drought this evening.
Referee Adrian Cordero initially made the game level again when he sent off Pablo Ibáñez for a challenge on Djibril Sow, but after a VAR review, this was downgraded to a yellow card.
Seizing upon that reprieve, Los Rojillos started the second half brightly, with Bryan Zaragoza delivering an impressive cross that found Ante Budimir, who unfortunately headed wide.
Chances were sparse for Sevilla, but Lucien Agoumé should have levelled the match when he headed wide from close range following a corner.
Aside from that missed chance, Vicente Moreno’s side looked quite assured, with Zaragoza coming close to doubling the lead with a speculative effort that skimmed just past the post.
Ultimately, García’s exquisite free-kick would be the decisive factor in Pamplona, leaving the seven-time UEFA Europa League champions Sevilla facing a daunting relegation battle with just five games remaining this season.
Caparrós’ men have slipped to 16th in the standings, while Osasuna’s hopes of competing in a major European competition for the first time in 19 years are very much alive, climbing three spots to eighth place.
