Aston Villa’s manager, Unai Emery, has described the upcoming Champions League quarter-final against his former team, Paris Saint-Germain, as “both special and spectacular.” However, he remains focused on steering his side towards ongoing success at the pinnacle of European football.
Emery returns to Paris for the first leg on Wednesday, having previously managed the recently crowned Ligue 1 champions from 2016 to 2018, during which he secured a league title in the 2017/18 season.
Since taking the helm at Villa in 2022, the Spaniard has led the Birmingham club to their first appearance in Europe’s top club competition in over 40 years and is eager to build on this success by reaching the semi-finals.
“When I arrived at Aston Villa, it was a significant challenge. My aim was to win titles and gain a place in Europe. Competing in the Champions League is an incredible achievement, but maintaining that status is my next goal,” Emery told the media on Tuesday.
“Playing in Paris for a quarter-final is something truly special and spectacular for everyone associated with this club. However, we aspire to be consistent at this level. We feel confident about our chances and wish to enjoy the experience.”
“Everything I accomplished here is a part of my journey. It’s particularly meaningful for me to return to Paris under these circumstances. My responsibility lies with the club I currently manage, and I’m committed to getting the best out of the team and our players.”
Emery acknowledged the considerable strengths of his opponents, who eliminated Liverpool in the previous round, but is intent on ensuring his squad is competitive at the Parc des Princes.
“They’re exhibiting fantastic football. Under Luis Enrique, they are consistently competitive, demonstrating superiority in both the league and the Champions League. In the last 16 match against Liverpool, they displayed tremendous power,” he noted.
“They excel in pressing, utilising their players effectively, and are incredibly aggressive and intense in every action they take across the pitch. We aim to compete and make our presence felt on the field.”
