Discover the key moments from the Round 25 showdown between Melbourne City and Central Coast Mariners.
Melbourne City has closed the gap to just six points behind league frontrunners Auckland FC following their 1-0 victory over Central Coast Mariners at AAMI Park.
City broke through in the 29th minute when forward Medin Memeti netted his fourth goal of the season, finishing off a superbly executed free-kick that left the Mariners’ defence in disarray within their own penalty area.
Despite controlling the match at AAMI Park, City struggled to secure a second goal to put the encounter beyond doubt and encountered a late scare when Mariners defender Mikael Doka sent a threatening free-kick just off target.
Nonetheless, Aurelio Vidmar’s team clinched the three points at home, moving them closer to the league leaders and keeping them in pursuit of second-placed Western United.
On the other hand, the Mariners, managed by Mark Jackson, were unable to register a single shot on target during their visit to AAMI Park and remain in 10th place on the ladder.
Although the Mariners created some promising opportunities early on, it was City who struck first thanks to a precise set-piece move straight from training.
Receiving the ball just outside the box from a cleverly disguised short free-kick, Socceroo Tilio found Kai Trewin’s run at the back post. Trewin’s intelligent cutback was then expertly finished off by Memeti, making it 1-0.
Trailing behind, the Mariners nearly found themselves two goals down before half-time as Memeti’s powerful header forced keeper Peraic-Cullen into a brilliant save.
Continuing with their momentum, the home side sought to extend their lead in the second half, with Kai Trewin testing Dylan Peraic-Cullen with a shot from just outside the box.
However, while City displayed control throughout, they almost allowed the Mariners to equalise in rather unfortunate fashion.
City’s goalkeeper, Patrick Beach, ventured far out of his area to deal with a loose ball but mistakenly passed it directly to Alou Kuol, rather than to his teammates. Fortunately for City, Kuol’s audacious shot from nearly 50 metres out was deflected away from goal.
After that minor blunder, City continued to press, with Peraic-Cullen denying Memeti from close range and then effectively smothering a fierce low effort from striker Max Caputo.
The Mariners struggled to build any meaningful attacks, rarely putting pressure on City’s defence, but they did raise concerns for goalkeeper Beach in the closing stages, as Mikael Doka’s dangerous free-kick narrowly missed the target.
Failing to record a single shot on target throughout the match, the Mariners threw everything forward in the dying minutes but came closest to equalising with a late header that struck the roof of the net just before the final whistle.
