Bayern Munich overturned an early deficit to secure a 3-1 victory against local rivals Augsburg at the WWK Arena, marking the opening encounter of round 28 in the Bundesliga. This triumph has stretched their lead to nine points over second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, who are set to face Heidenheim on Saturday.
The initial phases of the match were devoid of significant goal-scoring opportunities, with Leroy Sané being the only visiting player to threaten, misfiring a volley from a corner, which was comfortably saved by Finn Dahmen.
Just seven minutes later, Sané received a pass from Jamal Musiala but could only find the side netting from a tight angle. Augsburg’s first attempt on goal arrived in the 24th minute, as Samuel Essende’s cross flashed past the post.
Shortly after Michael Olise’s free kick was kept too close to Dahmen, Augsburg seized the lead with a quick free kick executed by captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw.
Dimitrios Giannoulis caught Konrad Laimer off guard, connecting with the ball and cleverly creating space before unleashing a thunderous shot that struck the underside of the bar to give Augsburg the advantage.

This goal revitalised Vincent Kompany’s squad, who equalised just three minutes prior to half-time.
This time, it was Sané assisting as he cut inside from the left, finding Musiala, who managed to fend off the challenges from both Gouweleeuw and Cédric Zesiger before finishing powerfully on the turn.

That equaliser would have altered the nature of Kompany’s half-time address, but he was aware his team needed to up their game in the second half.
Just over five minutes into the second half, Bayern faced a setback when Musiala had to leave the pitch due to a hamstring injury. In his absence, Sané set up Olise, whose first-time strike clattered the crossbar.
The match took a pivotal turn just before the hour mark as Zesiger, already on a yellow card, mismanaged a ball pass to Kane and in a frantic effort to repossess it, he brought down the England captain, receiving a second yellow card from Matthias Jöllenbeck.

From the ensuing free kick, Olise swung in a tantalising delivery that was met by a diving header from Kane, who made no mistake from close range to hand Bayern a vital lead.
Following that, Bayern managed the game effectively to secure the win, capping it off in stoppage time with a deflected effort from Sané, marking his 50th Bundesliga goal.
Augsburg’s first league defeat of 2025 poses a significant setback for their European ambitions. Meanwhile, the Bayern camp will be anxiously awaiting updates on Musiala’s fitness ahead of crucial fixtures in Europe and a domestic clash against Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan.
