Australia’s preparations for the Champions Trophy have hit a stumbling block after an unexpected defeat to Sri Lanka in Colombo, where captain Charith Asalanka’s remarkable century provided a glimmer of hope for the hosts.
Sri Lanka, after winning the toss, opted to bat first but faced a rocky beginning.
The opening pair of Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando both fell early, contributing just six runs, as Spencer Johnson and Aaron Hardie claimed the wickets.
The poor start spiralled further for Sri Lanka, plummeting to 5-55 within just 14.3 overs.
Key players Kusal Mendis (19), Kamindu Mendis (5), and Janith Liyanage (11) were all dismissed during this turbulent phase.

A crucial partnership of 67 runs between Dunith Wellalage and Asalanka restored some pride to the innings.
Wellalage eventually fell for 30, with Steve Smith pulling off a spectacular one-handed catch off the bowling of Matt Short.
“He’s an absolute genius, whether batting or at first slip, it’s an utter beauty,” praised Simon Katich on Seven.
Maheesh Theekshana soon joined the dismissals at 8-135, leading many to believe Australia would have an uncomplicated chase.
Yet, Asalanka wasn’t done yet; he exploded onto the scene, smashing an aggressive century that kept Sri Lanka in contention.
Asalanka’s remarkable innings concluded at 127 off 126 deliveries, marking his highest score in One Day Internationals.
Asitha Fernando was the final batter to fall, bowled by Sean Abbott for a duck as Sri Lanka were all out for 214.
Australia’s reply was troubling from the start, with Matt Short dismissed for a golden duck on the very first delivery. The innings quickly crumbled to 4-31, with Jake Fraser-McGurk (2), Cooper Connolly (3), and Steve Smith (12) all falling for low scores.
Though a partnership of 52 between Marnus Labuschagne (15) and Alex Carey (41) provided some respite, both were dismissed within six balls at 6-85.
Contributions towards the end from Aaron Hardie (32), Sean Abbott (20), and Adam Zampa (20 not out) were not enough, as Australia was bowled out for 165, losing by 49 runs.
“It’s a memorable match here,” commented Russel Arnold during the broadcast.
Theekshana shone with the ball, finishing with impressive figures of 4-40.
This victory marks Sri Lanka’s sixth consecutive win in Colombo.
