The chef de mission for Australia at the Milano-Cortina Olympics, Alisa Camplin, has expressed her concerns about Italy hosting the most geographically dispersed Winter Games to date, issuing a cautionary note approximately a year in advance.
“This Olympic event will present numerous challenges,” Camplin remarked during Nine’s coverage of the Australian Open.
“With eight separate venues spread over 400 kilometres across the Italian Alps, and multiple events occurring on the same day in various locations, we aim to maintain a level of calmness and warmth throughout.”
Camplin, who earned her Olympic gold in freestyle skiing at the Salt Lake City Games in 2002, recalls those Games mainly for Steven Bradbury’s astonishing come-from-behind victory in speedskating.
Fast forward over twenty years, and for the first time, the Olympics will be jointly hosted by the cities of Milano and Cortina, spanning an area of 22,000 square kilometres.
The Italian government is facing significant logistical challenges, including issues with transport infrastructure that have been worsened by recurrent landslides. Event and team officials will undoubtedly encounter logistical difficulties when the Games commence in February 2026.

Camplin acknowledged that her role would necessitate a significant problem-solving approach while in Italy, but she is determined to leverage her experience as an Olympic athlete to support the Australian team.
“I understand the vulnerability of the athletes, the pressure they undergo, and what it takes to achieve their best, alongside the challenges faced by their coaches,” Camplin elaborated.
“My goal is to share that knowledge and provide unwavering support. Whatever issues may emerge, I’m here to alleviate those problems. Ultimately, it’s a service role; my aim is to unify the team and support the athletes and coaches unconditionally.”
In other Olympic news, Australian snowboarding star Scotty James, a dual medalist, wowed audiences with a stellar performance that earned him World Cup gold in the halfpipe at the Laax Open on Sunday (AEDT).
James, alongside promising young snowboarder Valentino Guseli and freestyle skier Jakara Anthony, is anticipated to be among Australia’s standout athletes at the Milano-Cortina Games.
“Our elite athletes are currently focusing on honing their most challenging skills, ensuring that they feel prepared and under less pressure as the Olympics draw nearer,” Camplin stated.
