Chippa United are set to face Mamelodi Sundowns this Friday night in a hastily rescheduled Betway Premiership fixture, aiming to achieve the seemingly ‘impossible’ feat of securing a victory in Pretoria.
Sundowns have been phenomenal at home across all competitions, with an astonishing league record when playing in front of their supporters.
Let’s take a look at some statistics that highlight their dominance on home turf.
Unstoppable at Home
Sundowns have clinched victory in their last eight matches, both home and away, in the Betway Premiership, putting them in strong contention alongside Orlando Pirates in the title race.
On their home ground, they have triumphed in 23 of the last 24 fixtures, with their sole disadvantage being a 1-1 draw against Pirates back in November.
This incredible form translates to 70 points out of a possible 72 since their 1-0 defeat to Cape Town City on the last day of the 2023/24 season.
That defeat remains their only home loss in the league over the past four years.
Since their setback against TS Galaxy in August 2022, they have competed in 53 home league matches, achieving 46 victories, six draws, and just that one loss.
This equates to an impressive total of 144 points from a possible 159. Quite remarkable, indeed.
Chippa’s Disappointing Record in Pretoria
Chippa have taken to the road to face Sundowns 14 times since their first meeting in Pretoria in 2012, suffering defeat in 13 of those encounters. They have managed to score just three goals while conceding 29.
Their only escape from defeat was a goalless draw in 2017.
However, they did hold Sundowns to a 1-1 draw in the Eastern Cape during this current campaign.
In total, Sundowns lead the head-to-head stats with 19 wins to Chippa’s 2, alongside 10 draws, although they’ve been thoroughly dominant at home.
The three players who have found the net for Chippa in away matches against Sundowns are Mark Mayambela, Rhulani Manzini, and Thabiso Lebitso, with Lebitso being the most recent to score over three years ago.
Poor Performance on the Road
Chippa United have struggled significantly away from home over the past year, managing to secure just one victory in that timeframe. This solitary triumph came against fellow relegation battlers Orbit College in January, where they nabbed a 1-0 win.
Their remaining away fixtures have been fraught with difficulty. Since March 2025, they have competed in 19 away games, resulting in eight draws and 10 losses alongside that one win.
This season, they have garnered a mere seven points from 33 available on the road, managing to score only seven goals during that span.
Only bottom-placed Magesi FC, with five points, have accrued fewer points on their travels this season.
