Shakhtar Donetsk have left AZ facing a significant challenge for the return leg in Alkmaar after the Ukrainian powerhouse secured a 3-0 victory, which included a stunning goal from Pedrinho and a late double from Alisson.
Under the guidance of Arda Turan, Shakhtar made their first appearance in a European quarterfinal since 2020, when they were eliminated from the UEFA Europa League by Inter Milan in a hefty 5-0 defeat. On the other hand, AZ reached the UEFA Conference League quarterfinals for the second time in three seasons after overcoming Anderlecht in a penalty shootout in 2023.
A surprising injury to Shakhtar midfielder Isaque interrupted the match as the Brazilian fell awkwardly alongside AZ full-back Seiya Maikuma and appeared to lose consciousness. Although he initially returned to the pitch, Isaque was soon substituted for treatment.
The crowd at Synerise Arena in Krakow, Poland, witnessed the first attempt on goal after 44 minutes, with Shakhtar’s Alisson making the effort, which was comfortably saved by veteran keeper Jeroen Zoet.
The second half opened up with both teams creating chances through Weslley Patati and Kauã Elias, but neither side managed to apply real pressure in front of goal.
As time wore on, it looked as though the deadlock would remain unbroken, but Shakhtar finally took the lead in the 72nd minute when Pedrinho produced a remarkable piece of skill, hitting a high shot that nestled in the top corner after striking the crossbar.
AZ squandered several opportunities to equalise, misplacing crucial passes; one from a corner fell perfectly for Alisson, who made no mistake in firing his shot into the bottom corner.
In a final push, Shakhtar extended their advantage in the 84th minute, with Alisson completing a well-crafted move to secure a commanding position heading into the second leg.
Shakhtar’s decisive performance gives them a formidable 3-0 lead to defend when they return to Alkmaar next week for the second leg.
