SSC Napoli’s aspirations for the Serie A title remain intact, clinching a narrow 1-0 victory against bottom-placed AC Monza, which sees them level on points with league leaders Inter Milan. This loss likely seals Monza’s fate for relegation, as the hosts have only managed to secure two points from their last 39 available.
From the outset, Monza chose to sit back and invite Napoli to break down their defence. While Scott McTominay forced a peculiar save from a free-kick and Amir Rrahmani saw a powerful header narrowly miss the target, the hosts were generally able to contain the attacking threats posed by Antonio Conte’s side.
Almost midway through the first half, Monza nearly punished their rivals when Gaetano Castrovili cut in from the right, evading his marker, only to see his shot skim just wide of Alex Meret’s post.
A misfired shot from Romelu Lukaku epitomised a frustrating first half for Napoli, who registered 11 attempts on goal but rarely looked like scoring. The situation could have been worse if Dany Mota had not diverted teammate Alessandro Bianco’s effort off course.
This fixture was expected to offer a much-needed boost for Gli Azzurri, who hadn’t won any of their last five away league fixtures. However, they continued to struggle after the interval, not managing a shot on target until the 69th minute, when Matteo Politano was set up by Giacomo Raspadori, but Stefano Turati was equal to the challenge with a fine save.
Just four minutes later, the long-awaited goal arrived, orchestrated by Raspadori, who delivered a pinpoint cross for McTominay to head home past the committed Turati.
Substitute Raspadori nearly added to the lead with a deflected shot in the closing ten minutes, but one goal proved sufficient for the Neapolitans, who have recorded eight clean sheets in nine encounters against teams in the bottom six.
This result has left Monza staring relegation in the face, now sitting 11 points adrift of safety with only five matches remaining. Their three-year stay in the Italian top flight could officially come to an end as soon as the final whistle against Juventus next Sunday.
