Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has addressed the media in anticipation of this weekend’s encounter with Manchester City.
A disappointing sequence of back-to-back Premier League losses to Newcastle and Everton has seen Chelsea slip to sixth in the table, just one point behind Liverpool in fifth and seven points adrift of fourth-placed Aston Villa.
With the pressure mounting, Rosenior is keen to secure his second Premier League win in seven attempts, with his primary aim being to break into the Champions League spots as the campaign nears its conclusion in the remaining seven fixtures.
Fernandez sidelined for Man City fixture
Rosenior also confirmed that Enzo Fernandez will be absent for the match against City, following comments he made regarding his future, which hinted at a potential move to Real Madrid, crossing a line in the manager’s eyes.
“We had a productive conversation. He has apologised to me and the club. We’ll address it after this significant match on Sunday,” Rosenior stated.
“You have to ensure that the punishment fits the mistake. I’ve made a decision here. What I want for Enzo is for him to realise a fantastic career. He won’t play on Sunday.
“There are core values and cultural principles I stand by that, if upheld, will strengthen the club.”
Rosenior optimistic about securing three points
With injuries keeping Filip Jorgensen, Levi Colwill, Reece James, Trevoh Chalobah, and Jamie Gittens out of action, Rosenior is looking to rotate his squad, believing they can make a significant impact against City.
“I recognise the greatness of others; I don’t possess an inflated ego. Pep (Guardiola) has had a monumental effect on football. He’s an exceptional coach with a remarkable legacy, but I’m determined for my team to demonstrate their capabilities on Sunday.
“He’s won trophies and invigorated his squads. He’s had the time to establish his philosophy.
“We must stay focused and avoid errors because City will take advantage.”
When asked if Chelsea can triumph over City, he replied: “Absolutely. We’re a strong side; we’ve endured a challenging patch. Upon reviewing our recent matches, we’ve caused problems for every team we’ve faced, even if the results haven’t reflected that.”
